Couplings were introduced many years ago to avoid stables being able to mislead the punter with multiple entries and then manipulating the result-simple as that!
It was an aspect that protected the integrity of the tote betting, so the question is whether the NHA were consulted and approved the implications of dismantling the principle?
Of course,on the basis that he who pays the piper calls the tune, the regulators will endorse any action of the operators.
Racing is making it easy for those who are critical of the lack of competition or independent regulation.

i dont see what all the fuss is all about...in all due respect the R20.00 punter is not in the game to win R10.00 ...he also wants and expects value...and what better way than to win R2000 FOR his R20.00....dividends will definitely be boosted..and this alone will cause the hype .On July day had HEAVY Metal not been coupled..the p6 would have paid in excess of R4m.....to the thousands that were at the course (social gamblers)...this would def have stirred a few into realising that hey...there is actually a more realistic chance here of winning a big dividend in horse racing that the lotto and casino put together...and thats the kind of new money thats required to enhance pools...Some may say..ppl may get tired of continuously losing...theres no sign of that with the lotto....i know of ppl who have played lotto without success and continue putting their R20.00 WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT,in the hope of winning that big amount

there should be no horse couplings in a race, if the operators have more races to certain distances to cater for the trainers. The trainers are forced to race raleigh teams to either give the horse a run instead of sitting in a box,Any way u look at it if their is only the operators who comes up tops whether carryover or not their slice is banked,What aggravates me is not the rule change but the overall industry needs transformation, were is sectional timing, gallops so that the punter can make a informed choice, not betting blindly.
Best of luck to those who will play:S

I too dont see the problem. Sa has the option for fractional betting so that makes it easie. Also if rob is correct ( sure he is) then the introduction of couplings has not really stopped the " wrong one" from winning. Nor has it stopped carryovers. Sometimes the wrong one wins and surprises everyone. The only issue for me is kimberley and pe but thats not because of couplings its more because of serious in and out running, not because the trainer is a cheat but because he seriously does not have a scoobies which one of the 5 will win.

i agree totally...because of fractional betting...its up to u...of how much u wanna dilute your payout
i dont even take a p6 in kimberley..because of all the couplings...but now ...if i fancy 1 ..i will banker the 1 i was gonna have a bet on...and take it with 5 strong fields....and hope for the "wrong ones"

Interesting opinions - I am surprised by the mostly 'in favor' responses; for me, the cost to have a realistic chance of catching a P6 would escalate dramatically once couplings are removed (even taking fractional betting into account) and as one of the 'R20 punters', I would now rather invest that extra R20 into the PA - would be interesting to see what the effect on the pools will be.

The biggest problem with PE racing, barring in and out runners, is that they seem to be the only place in the country have have full fields for every race so other than the odd plated race you are looking at 16 runners a race in open handicaps. Jackpots have open paid over R100k now add 2 legs to that and you will bet regular carryovers. Congrats to PE racing for getting full fields. (tu)
The one thing I would love to see is Phumelela do if they want to compete with the Lottery is having a "Super Carryover" where all Pick 6 carryovers for the month goes into one race day on say the last Saturday of the month or a big race day like Summer Cup, Met and July day. Here if they advertised this correctly on National TV could grab plenty of interest and bring more R20 players taking a chance to try and catch a share of a massive pool. Just my wish.

When I say "biggest problem", it is from a gambling perspective.

Frodo
But its the r20 punter that often sticks in the horse with his daughters name and catches the bob p6. I think this is a masterstroke. Unlike the uk where via betfairs api professionals can process 1000's of scoop 6 bets in a millisecond and therefore repeatedly win the bet, the sa tote is so far behind that " pros" still need to either call their bets or fill in tickets. So this now makes the " dream win" more realistic for the r20 punter.

I'm all for a 'Super Carryover' once a month - an addtional bet where no couplings apply and also no 'first timer rule' - a bet to rival the Lotto; however I would not have fiddled with the P6 as it stands - just my opinion

With all due respect if u taking a r20 pick 6 ( even as 1%) u relying on plenty luck.
