I say pay the grooms 10k a month give them each a house which would be their second house, the other being on tribal land where their rates goes to the local chief. Continue with their families social grants and make training fees 18k a month per horse and make the stakes split Trainer 12.5% Jockey 12.5% Groom 12.5% and while we at it give the Bookmakers 5%
All my interests in race horses will be dissolved over the next 6 weeks so good luck with the continued mismanagement.

No matter what you give them......it won't be enough! You will every year have the same problem and a line in the sand HAS to be drawn.

Wow. Your tune has changed since we got into our initial "debate" about the future of racing. Sorry to see you go but in my humble opinion you are making the right call.

So if they are retrenching grooms, does that mean the grooms they keep are now going to have to do 4 horses each for a pittance?
Or is it because they know in a few months time they might need to pay 5-6-7k a month?

Re: Randji Strike
6 years 10 months ago....sorry to see you're getting out....but I agree....racing is becoming uglier....and this grooms issue is only the thin edge of the wedge....there was a time when I should have been a great promoter of the game as I was totally blinded/blinkered(plus ear muffs) by pure passion....but quickly found that the scheming nature of those in positions of influence(power) were in it for personal gain.....not gonna mention names of any that have eventually made hay in the interim but this grooms and their up- liftment was supposed to be addressed in P country by the Racing Trust and the RA....but some greedy bugger/s jumped the gun in a scheme to corner an opportunity and stuck some (private) investors into buying properties for grooms housing/lodgings in Turffontien and Ranjies.....the RA/Racing Trust were then at a nice mark-up going to buy these properties for the intended purpose.....things went pear shaped.... as the not too cleva's were totally out of their league did not manage to pull it off...some investors holding the can laid complaints..a big cover up...certain people shuffled....laid low....and are now in clover........and then the Trust was used for other purposes with the grooms getting....zilch... :sick:Over the Air wrote:Tigershark wrote: I say pay the grooms 10k a month give them each a house which would be their second house, the other being on tribal land where their rates goes to the local chief. I’m sure a groom does 2-3 horses in the smaller yards
Would hope Grooms in bigger stables do less ( better )

Most do 3 with headgrooms normally doing 1/2 depending on hoe much other work he does in the yard.

Bob
Grooms do 3 horses and have done so for more than 50 years in most racing yards. In some Overseas Countries, most grooms do 5 horses.
It's about hours.
Point is that the grooms have now encountered a red light to their unrealistic demands. Right now there are many experienced grooms going around looking for work. That is a reflection of the whole Country, the Economy. Racing in SA is no different. Phumelela were completely wrong and stupid to have engaged with EFF in the first place. Suddenly, when their Tote tellers become the next victims, they wake up and now get Court orders and now refuse to deal with "political parties".
The boyz at Vaal never took their Sh@t and had own Security on standby, with water canons etc. EFF left quietly...
The so called unreasonable, bad for racing hard liners are Vaal were right all along...it seems, based on Phum's new reaction.
Common sense should prevail. THERE IS NO WORK OUT THERE for people with qualifications, let alone for rural people, with no education, cannot read and write, cannot speak English and have no qualifications.
We have all given good increases and a few of us have gone out of our way for our staff. This is exemplary in a tired economy. Somebody needs to talk some sense into the grooms heads instead of inciting them. There is NO MORE MONEY AVAILABLE. Definitely not whilst "the great white hope" Cyril , idly sits and watches the Country self destruct, not saying a word and not acting at all.

Tigershark's decision aggravates and irritates me. Here is a fellow forumite whom I met briefly a few months ago at Greyville. I was immediately impressed by his enthusiasm for Racing and for him being a cordial and nice person. Why in hell's name must we lose him to racing?
In fact, as infamous as ABC might be, to the powers that be, I am always impressed by the passion for racing and the great knowledge of Racing which I encounter when I meet ABC forumites in person. Yes, we often disagree vehemently, but that is life. Rather an opinion than nothing.
Firstly, I don't train for Johnno (Oscar), but I was one of many shouting for his horse at Scottsville. Why ? Because he LOVES his horses, is a PROPER Owner and knows Racing. He loves it. And he is an avid ABC man.
And then there are my favourite enemies on the site - Muhti and Mr H. Lord knows how much these two can offer Racing. We definitely do not always agree but these okes are tops. Imagine having a yard where Muhti is your specialist adviser on supplements and surfaces and then Mr H is your form analyst ? Lord knows that if I had the money, I would contract them. And of course, that two edged sword, Hilton W. Imagine those 3 on your team !!!
Let's not forget the biggest "victim" of us all, Dave Scott. What happens when these guys walk away ?
Guys, Racing cannot afford to lose any of you. It will be much much poorer.
