Another sad day for racing ... imvho the economic model is currently not able to sustain racing on the scale that we have been used to ...

Stakes imo the biggest issue - and stakes is dependent on betting pools - which have not been increasing at a rate that can sustain the stakes increases needed to not keep falling behind costs .....

Too many horses, too many trainers, too many fat cats and too many jobless trying to earn a living wage as a groom :(

As a long standing owner who cares about the trainers, the jockeys, the work riders and most importantly the grooms who live for the horses more than most will ever know.. with the lack of transparency on the grooms issues now after my calls 2 months ago I really think it’s time now for racing in South Africa to look at the current system which runs, controls and is supposed to protect all stakeholders for changes to the structure and possibly management to ensure its survival into the future. The grooms are together with the trainer. jockey and work rider the most important people in horse racing and they need a structure which supports and incentivizes them-us owners choose to own horses just as punters choose to bet on horses, nobody is forcing us to.. that cannot be said about the other pillars of racing as racing is their profession just as medicine, law etc are professions

It’s now time!

whilst this obviously affects racing it is symptomatic of the way this country is going.
extreme intimidation emboldend by a complete lack of respect for the rule of law.
an radical minority terrorising the majority and holding the trainers to ransom.
we are all stuffed. racing and everything else.

i know there are valid grievances which need addressing its how they go about it that is terrifying. there is a mob rule/justice mentality in this country that will destroy s a .

This is a major catastrophe for the racing industry. Now is the time for the top brass or bigwigs to make some bold decision to rectify the current situation in order to prevent the cancellation or postponement of Durban July Handicap.

TRAINERS and members of the grooms’ association met at Randjesfontein on Thursday and reached an agreement on wages. The grooms were asking for a minimum wage of R14,000 but have settled in the meantime for what trainer Mike Azzie confirmed was a “substantial increase”. It is said that wages will be raised to R4,000 per month.

As far as Phumelela’s Racing Manager Clyde Basel is concerned, racing will be going ahead at Turffontein on Sunday. “I am not under the impression that Sunday is at risk,” said Basel.
