DOCTOR R wrote: R724 a week!!!!!!!!

Is it the EFF seeking attention or taking advantage of the situation?
.....seems that the trainers were a bit slow on the government mandate to increase salaries/wages to the minimum wage of R724/week...........by now agreeing to R4000/month they are inline....but do grooms now forfeit their proposed % of stakes....

to me all these Salary expectations just lead to further unemployment. for two reasons off the top of my head.
1. I retrench or don't replace people when they resign or retire
2. new business does not get opened because staff costs make the business proposition unprofitable.
in an environment where unemployment is high and education is a national disaster we cant live in fairy land and think everyone will earn a living wage. just not possible.
u add to that our high birth rate and extra illegal visitors from other countries and we have a recipe for Social chaos.
I would rather work for 850 a week than wait for a govt grant of 400 a month
i would rather work for 850 a week and have a reason for getting up in the morning
i would rather work for 850 a week and learn a skill that may allow me to rise thru the ranks of formal employment of skill me up enough to go out on my own as an entrepreneur.

.....if a trainer can afford to pay me R14K per month to move manure....I'd gladly give up my day job.... and muck out boxes comb and feed horses and then spend the rest of my day here telling you I have a good thing for us to have a good punt on..... :P

R20x40hr week = R800 x 4.3 = R3440pm granted is not really a living wage as you cannot feed and house a family on this income (granted grooms are provided with accommodation but where do their families live). R4000 is also not do-able but fair for unschooled labour job, suits beginner youngster? Not someone feeding and housing a family though and here our President is right in wanting to raise it, but we need better economics to enable this across the board. Alas this is the wage for all in the country for unschooled labour at the moment - cleaning/gardening/low skilled job. Look on any jobsite and you'll see beginner school leaver position admin about R5000 pm, day job gardening R160-R180 for 8hrs work. Tricky situation.

Training fee per horse = approx R9000x3 horses per groom = R18000pm less cost/overheads.
Simplified extreme of course - what to do? R14k p m is unrealistic expectation though.

.....the magic ZAR14K number is what is expected for an above average stable assistant....not all grooms can be placed in this supervisory area of overseeing the total running of a stable.....

R4000 is still too low, you can’t support a family on that

6-7k probably a fair figure

Remember they punting as well. So R4000 too little.

I am sure they get inside info.

6 -7k? Trainers might as well close shop. You will struggle to get that with a matric.

People don' t have to be grooms, they choose it, generally they are people that leave school way before matric. what does a car guard earn a month? or a domestic worker? EFF will kill racing in SA rather than keep thousands employed! Idiots
