That sounds like "suspension with full pay"-MORE COSTS?...The solution to this entire problem would be a collective agreement between Groom Representative body/Union,Employer and Bargaining Council/CCMA.

....why go to all that extra grief....simple case of retrenchment....one week pay for each year of service...last in 1st out.....get rid of the the trouble makers, the slackers and those with least will and passion....problem solved...bet they think twice about getting a permanent holiday or minimum wage and accommodation.....however this could have been avoided....back in 2010 there were grand plans for the grooms ....better standard of living even talk of low cost housing ....but alas.....empty promises to appease transformation issues to parliament back in the day.... :S

I really do think that owners also need to work with trainers as regards this issue, at the end of the day owners/trainers ARE partners in the horses well being if not ownership, and to be honest even if I had to sell/retire any horses I own to make sure the grooms are happy with a mutually agreed upon payment structure which also incentivises them to help make sure the horses I keep are in great shape I would do that.

I assure u Oscar your horses as are all others beautifully looked after. And grooms who are competent are very well looked after by their employers ( trainers).

.....would not dispute the groom living conditions at Ranjies.....but who is to blame.....according to what was published the RA owns the training facility including grooms quarters....which they rent out to PHUM......

Muhti
What do u do when you replace a toilet seat on a Friday and by Monday morning it is broken off again. Then you keep on repeating the process over and over again, not just with the Toilet seats but also with shower caps, lights, toilet roll holders, soap dispensers, door handles etc etc etc.
At some stage, it just becomes impossible to manage, you just give up, surely ?

......Louis I know how it goes....my Grand father had an exceptional stable complex in Newmarket with 1st class grooms facilities....which was turned into a 3rd world dive in a matter of months....
turned the baths into storage for coal then burned the wooden toilet seats and doors as firewood
used the bed frames as braai grids when they got a sheep as a winning bonus....broke the windows to stop them from dying of carbon monoxide fumes when taking coal fired braziers into the sleeping quarters etc ....however in this day and age....hostel type living needs to be monitored and have security to insure that it is not turned into a sh!t house with no seats lights and beds.....so the grooms broke everything and now blame the trainers for not paying them enough....
....they have to figure out how to stop this savage lifestyle and fix the problem then police the grooms to stop them from trashing everything....

Same at Summerveld. Window panes, toilets, rooms all having items replaced the whole time. Toilets rolls replaced all the time but have to call out specialist plumbers every week to clean drains of newspaper, cloths, bags, cardboard etc. Never ending cost.

Something to try - work out what the maintenance costs are per month - Maybe it's 5k average who knows - then get the grooms together and elect four reps to oversea facilities - Every month whatever amount is under the ave half goes to grooms for braai etc or just give them cash - Take pictures of Facilities in good order have them laminated and hang up near the entrance as a reference - Maybe it works

The sad thing is that we all seem to agree that people have to he policed 24/7 in order to prevent senseless, vandalism. The same people who then cry, plead poverty and that they are hard done by with poor living standards.
What are these Unions and grooms going to do when Racing says "NO MORE" and closes down the Hostels ?
