“If I owned Abashiri I would not be running him. I am not saying he can’t win the race, we are going to have him fit and well enough, but he has his whole career ahead of him and personally I would have waited for him to strengthen and furnish and bring him back here as a four-year-old.”

They did things much differently back in the old days. This horse Abba runs in the famous silks of Politician but he has to go a long long way to fill the shoes of the champ.
For the record Syd Laird took Polly to Turffies and won the Dingaans, albeit narrowly from Noon Flight.
Off to Milnerton it was for the Cape Guineas which the champ won beating 2 top sorts in driving finish.
Still in the Cape he goes on to win the Cape Derby in easy fashion.
Back to Kzn in the Winter and Polly and Syd and Bertie win the S.A. Guineas in easy fashion again.
Then came the July run.
A hard act to follow,...........for present day horsemen.

From sporting post article

Greyville is shocking …. all the horses ran out of form… In this state I will extract and put a movement from non local owners together to boikot any Greyville races. The track is not in a healthy state and makes Turffontein look like the garden of Eden – I am sorry to say the July on such a surface and unsafe state will see my scratching my July glory desire UNTIL the management of the course feel the pressure of the public and owners….
It is time for a movement to create a NEW JULY on a NEW COURSE which allow 20 runners which can fit into a bend…. like the glory days.
I would talk to VODACOM to reconsider their sponsorship for such abusing surface – destroyinf horse futures and robbing the public blind !.

Change happen with a first move… Abashiri started it – now let us give it voice and power.

Fair enough he knew the deal but he obviously really wants to win the July and is putting his money where his mouth is. Its one thing to be beaten , was a hard task for Abashiri no matter how the race was run but one can understand the sour taste in his mouth when his horse comes home sore from the track alone.
Fact is, unless enough stink is caused and sponsorships start going elsewhere, the track situation will not change

There was only 7 horses reported not striding out on July day from god knows how many runners...
Very low imo
ps 2 of the 7 were Oomph and Abashiri

8 years 11 months agothe damage is seen when they have cooled down bob ie the next morning not straight after the race ..like I said Andrew fortune made it very clear on how the track was as he don't have to kiss anyones aas in this game and has zero ulterior motives unlike many including a few on this siteBob Brogan wrote: There was only 7 horses reported not striding out on July day from god knows how many runners...

it would be interesting to hear Striker's or Grant's opinion of the track.....
form a time perspective the track was good throughout the day.....
