Off the topic a bit but lets not kid ourselves we are living in desperate times (crime, incompetent gov, soaring costs etc) and will continue to do so for years to come ...having visited Belgium it would be a great place to live...not to mention the years it would add onto our life expectancy..

Racing Guru I don't know where you get your info about "bush racing". Here are the facts regarding "bush racing". For nearly 30 years people have been looking forward to this annual event and people as far as Cape Town attend these races.
"Bush racing" starts on the last Saturday in June and it takes place in Bray in the Northwest Province (also known as the Bray July), 440km away from Kbly. The first Saturday in July is the turn of Vanzylsrus in the Kalahari, 460km away from Kbly and the second Saturday in July is the turn of Askham, in the middle of the Kalahari 620km away from Kbly.
These race meetings are sponsored by Phumelela Gaming and the Racing Trust. They each give R120 000.00 towards these three meetings.
These sponsorships encourage owners from the Kalahari and also help and uplift these very poor communities. The profits of these race meetings are put towards funds for schools and very poor families in the Kalahari and Northwest. The funds are controlled by the sports clubs and churches.
We do have many owners from these parts and 2 new owners applied for their colours last week after their last race meeting. The owner of one of our well known champion horses in Kimberley, Jack Dan, is Mr Jan du Preez, who organises the Bray race meeting.
These race meetings are for thoroughbred horses only and any owner of a race horse is allowed to race at these meetings. Every year owners from Namibia and Botswana attend these meetings. Every race meeting consists of 9 races. The first prize money is R5500, the second prize is R2500 and third prize is R1000 and one race is the main race with prize money of R15 000. NO betting allowed on these races. Before every race there is an auction and you can buy a horse, pools are between R2000 and R10 000. 30% of this pool will go to charity and the buyer of the winning horse gets the balance of the pool.
No professional jockeys can ride in these races, only work riders. "Jockeys" must wear body protectors and skull caps. A vet is present at every race meeting and normally 2 ambulances are available. The weight is normally 56kg, all horses carry the same weight unless your "jockey" weighs more. The "jockeys" are weighed in before every race and straight after the race they weigh out. Draws get done before every race when you enter your horse and the gates are in a perfect condition.
Maidens race against 4 and 5 time winners and very often they beat them, because these work riders ride their hearts out. We have been racing in the Kalahari for about 15 years and never have we encountered a horse that races there on a Saturday and then race on the Monday in Kimberley. I have never seen a horse broke down during a race, because these tracks are beautiful Kalahari sand tracks and they are well maintained by the farmers in that region. The Kalahari owners love their local racing and therefore they are prepared to keep horses in training during the year where they normally race at Flamingo Park. It is also not cheap to transport your horses to these meetings, pay for accommodation and food and wages for your staff.
I just wish that every owner can experience this unique feeling of "bush racing" just once in their lifetime.
