I am not a punter whatsoever... it really does not interest me in the slightest. But a few years back, I remember when the punters marched onto the track at Gosforth Park because an outdated rule had "robbed" them of their money... (and I'm not trying to open a discussion on that here). That action caused that rule to be reviewed and changed accordingly. The power of the masses...

I really think that by the sounds of it, you guys are once again, being "robbed". Is there no united group of representatives for the punter here in SA? Why are you guys not forming a committee and going to the tin gods and laying your cards on the table. You will urge for a massive tote boycott, unless they address your issues with transparency.(ask cosatu to help you!!! LOL) Just boycott one type of bet, say the place bet... show them what happens when you flex your muscles as a group...

Or is this asking too much?

tackle the auditors
King III report includes IT security
lodge complaint against the auditors at the assosiation.
the auditors will loose the status as catagory 1 auditors, and hence will not be able to audit any JSE listed company.

what gets me about Phumelela management.
Phumelela chief executive (SA) David Attenborough and Patrick Loker, Commercial Director of Gold Circle will sit and defend their companies without having any factual evidence infront of them.

That seems to be the problem with all South African JSE listed CEO's.
They are all like Hansie and Joost.
The staff inform them, hence they claim that they take informed decisions.
Well, they are informed by people that either are running the scam, part of the the scam, or are absolute idiots.

Then they come across as idiots too.
Look at the track record of their answers in the papers.
Amusing.
Sounds more like court jesters doing the articles.

Surely a printout of the DATABASE log (WHICH WILL TAKE A FEW MIN to do by the DBA)
will get them to make EDUCATED comments.
Display the contents on a web page for all to see.

yes but Andre a court order to produce the DATABASE log is a long way off and I can lay my head on a block they are not going to offer out of their own to have it looked at. Who is going to be the poor sod going the route of litigation...the sacrificial lamb like we had recently with RA and that barrister?

I think Rubyclipper's idea of flexing muscle could be far more effective....

getting the RA involved is like asking a bookmakers clerk 2 days before bonus day, if the bookmaker has ever pencilled in a winning bet after the race..

TAB MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Late changes to TAB payouts to be discussed on Tellytrack
DATE: Sunday 17 January
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Phumelela chief executive (SA) David Attenborough and Patrick Loker, Gold Circle’s commercial director, will appear on Inside Racing on Tellytrack (channel 232 DStv) on Monday night 18 January to address all aspects of the significant late changes to TAB payouts caused by large international wagers taken just before pools close.
Overseas bets currently comprise more than 30% of TAB Win and Place pools and the growing volume of international bets with TAB often results in significant differences between the final official payouts and those displayed at the start of a race.
Pools are closed immediately a race starts and no bets can be taken within South Africa or overseas after that. But it can take up to a minute after pools have closed for TAB’s computerised betting system to receive final pool totals from its international tote partners.
Immediately these are received, TAB’s system instantly does a final scan and generates the final payouts. Given that huge amounts of money are bet at the last moment, it is unfortunately unavoidable that payouts shown at the start of a race change, sometimes significantly, once the TAB system does its final scan.
Obviously ways are continually being sought to reduce the time between the start of a race and the final pool scan.
Inside Racing starts at 8pm and Attenborough and Loker will be first up on the show.

From this release we can already see what is going to be the official line. If 30% added late can have the effect its having by significantly reducing tote odds well below SP in many cases then:-

1. The overseas punters are far cleverer than the 70% of local punters betting into the win and place pool. If fact the % of winning tickets would be inordinately high in many instances, raising the right question of how? Perhaps the same people that win the local Lotto ?

2. The use of the word "often" in the statement suggests that the overseas punters are more informed. This needs to be explained otherwise the lucky numbers arguement is the only logical explanation.

Why are the overseas bets added so late and wouldn't you get pissed off as an overseas punter to constantly see the final dividends reduced significantly from those disseminated just before the off. If the 30% is correct then it must be affecting the overseas punters much more than us if 30% can move the existing 70% to the extent it does.

There is something rotten in the state of Denmark.

One of the disadvantages of betting on a tote is that the dividend is uncertain.

By allowing massive & late updates, they allow the dividends to become wildly uncertain in any direction. Once this becomes the norm those who carry on playing the tote will wait longer and longer before placing their bets.

The tote may take the extra money from distant players - but destroy their product on the way. You can only have a smaller bets as things get more uncertain.

Happily, in business you are either correct and prosper or wrong and doomed.

I'm sure there are other jobs.

Any update after the start of the race is highly suspicious and open to abuse. If it takes a certain amount of time for overseas bets to be added to the pool, then they should close those outlets that much earlier to ensure that all overseas bets are included in totals before the start of the race.
