This may be a stupid question but how do they earn stakes or money racing in the bush? What benefits are there besides the obvious running a horse a few times and then racing it as a first timer legitimately? It doesn’t make much sense to me... all that effort for what?

Hey Rob Stranger can you imagine the Van der merve jokes after this story gets told?

The owners bet against each other. That’s how racing started and it is how it will end in SA. You see, one does not need punters but only owners who will pay trainers and jocks wages and fees.

Wow Mac I respect you sir and obviously you are entitled to an opinion but that will never happen again unless it's a one on one. The take out from punting pools is what keeps this industry going and seriously there wouldn't and couldnt be enough owners trainers or jocks that could survive if that was the case. Owners already pay huge sums to trainers and vets and entry fees as well as transport to name a few. No form of racing will survive with a handfull of owners racing for their own money. That may have been the case a hundred years ago but it will never work now. No person in his right mind is going to go through the whole process of breeding and upkeep and racing at his own expense.. not in this day and age my friend. Maybe one or 2 would consider it ad a challenge or a once off but honestly it will never happen again as you describe it. The punters and their money is the only way this industry can and would survive. That's my opinion and of course you are entitled to yours.

I have just gone to check and had a quiet chuckle.
