2019 Track & Ball CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE

6 years 2 months ago - 6 years 1 month ago
#757358

We are thrilled to announce that Track & Ball Gaming are again sponsoring this year’s Charity Turf Challenge which kicks off on “The Independent On Saturday” Drill Hall Stakes Day, Friday 3 May, and finishes on Saturday 27 July headlined by the Gr.3 eLan Gold Cup with a supporting cast of top races featuring four Gr.1 events.

As you already know, the Charity Turf Challenge is an exciting competition that offers fans of the sport of horseracing a unique opportunity to test their skill – after all, racing is the “Intelligent Bet”!

So, what’s CHANGED this year?
• In these trying economic times, we’ve decided to “spread the love” with prize money (same quantum as in previous years) being paid out to 7th place:
o 1st – R75 000
o 2nd – R25 000
o 3rd – R15 000
o 4th – R10 000
o 5th – R7 500
o 6th – R5 000
o 7th – R2 500
• The stand-alone prize for the entry that earns the most points on Vodacom Durban July Day will be pitched at R10 000
• An extra bonus race (worth 5 points to the winner): Gr.3 Track & Ball Derby on 22 June
• A new charitable beneficiary: Coastal Horse Care Unit

For those who are trying the competition for the first time, the aim of the Charity Turf Challenge is to select a team of 12 horses you feel are most likely to score points during the official period of the Champions Season. A list of all the Graded races will be provided and whilst the emphasis remains on these feature races run in KZN, ALL winners throughout the country will be eligible to earn points. Don’t forget Turffontein’s big day on 4 May counts, so make sure you pay attention to the big guns, especially those that are likely to feature in the KZN Champions Season as well.

The points breakdown can be found below:
Grade 1 Races:
1st place 20 points
2nd place 14 points
3rd place 10 points
Grade 2 Races:
1st place 14 points
2nd place 9 points
3rd place 6 points
Grade 3 Races:
1st place 9 points
2nd place 5 points
3rd place 3 points
Listed Races:
1st place 2 points
All other Races:
1st place 1 point

Bonus Points: the following are eligible for 5 bonus points:
a) Bonus Races - the winners of the following races:
Gr.1 Tsogo Sun Sprint - 1200m (25 May at Scottsville Racecourse)
Gr.1 The Rising Sun Gold Challenge - 1600m (08 June at Greyville Racecourse)
Gr.3 Track & Ball Derby – 2400m (22 June at Scottsville Racecourse) ** NEW**
Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July - 2200m (06 July at Greyville Racecourse)
Gr.3 eLan Gold Cup - 3200m (27 July at Greyville Racecourse)
b) Long Shots - any winner whose official Tote win payout exceeds R15

Points will be scored on the FINAL result (all clear to pay) posted on SAFTOTE.

Racing South Africa, the competition host, will provide a list of horses that are thought to be campaigning in KZN during Champions Season. Only horses from this list are eligible.

The final list of horses is expected to be available by Wednesday 17 April. To the best of its knowledge, Racing South Africa will attempt to keep players informed of horses that are NOT participating for whatever reason.

Additional INCENTIVES for racing enthusiasts:
• FREE BONUS entry for every 5 entries submitted for ONLINE users (sixth entry is free)
• Track & Ball Gaming, is offering ALL CTC entrants a betting credit worth R200 added to their next deposit (minimum deposit of R50) online. Strange choice for a bonus race - the Track & Ball Derby - suppose the sponsors had to get something - for me either the Woolavington or the Daily News (or both) would have been a better choice - or even the Premier's at the Big T ....

Vaughan Marshall said yesterday One World would “definitely” not travel to KZN for the Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge or any other race during the SA Champions Season, although Adam Marcus was leaving his options open and said there was a “slim chance” Vardy would be seen in Durban over the winter.

The pair fought out a thrilling duel in the first leg of the Winter Series, the Grade 3 Winter Guineas, at Kenilworth on Saturday.

One World prevailed by a head under Anton Marcus.

An objection was lodged by Adam Marcus but the head on replay showed Vardy initiating the continual bumping in the final stages when hanging inward on to One World, so it never looked likely to be upheld.

Vardy was receiving 2kg from One World but on official merit ratings was still 6,5kg under sufferance with the 117 merit rated favourite.

Adam Marcus was thrilled with the improvement Vardy showed and said, “He is very immature and has a lot to learn so my initially feeling was to not take him to Durban as they have to go the opposite way around there and it is also a different style of racing, but the improvement he has shown has been really incredible, so we will keep our options open and take it race by race. But there is only a slim chance he will go to KZN and I will prepare him with the Winter Classic in mind. I think he will be much better as a four-year-old.”

Marshall said One World’s next engagement will also be in the Grade 3 Winter Classic, to be run over 1800m at Kenilworth on May 25.

So, the rivalry will be renewed and it is a race for the notebook.

One World is yet to be tried beyond a mile. However, being by Captain Al out of a Giant’s Causeway mare who placed over a-mile-and-two-furlongs in England he should get 1800m.

Marcus said about Vardy’s stamina range, “He is by Var but has classic looks and a beautiful length of rein and I’ve always been of the opinion he would be a 2000m horse.”

CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE 2019 sponsored by TRACK & BALL

This year’s Charity Turf Challenge sponsored by Track & Ball Gaming kicks off this Friday at Greyville Racecourse with a fantastic card headlined by “The Independent On Saturday” Gr.2 Drill Hall Stakes”. Friday’s meeting benefitted from the transfer of the four feature races scheduled for last Sunday’s meeting at Scottsville. This means that CTC entrants now have a feast of runners to choose from, starting in Race 2 with the running of the Listed In Full Flight Stakes at 17h30 when the competition officially closes.

Don’t forget to pay special attention to the runners on Turffontein’s finale the following day, featuring the Premier’s Champion Challenge and a host of other top class feature races. And, whilst the Cape’s Winter Guineas has already been run, the Winter Classic and Derby are potential point scoring opportunities. An exciting rematch between One World and Vardy is on the cards, and it’s hard to ignore Glen Kotzen’s, Herodotus, who will appreciate the step up in trip.

Racing South Africa and Gold Circle staff will be at Greyville on Friday to receive last minute entries. Look out for Sheila De Villiers and Mandy Hughes CTC stand next to the parade ring and Melinne Nathram in the Members/Durban View Room. For those unable to attend the meeting and intend submitting manual entries, please email or fax them to the following:

CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE 2019 sponsored by TRACK & BALL

There was an explosive start to this year’s Charity Turf Challenge sponsored by Track & Ball Gaming when HAWWAAM and PACIFIC TRADER won the Premier’s Champion Challenge and Computaform Sprint respectively earning their supporters the maximum points on offer. They lead the competition on 20 points with a group of seven horses on 14 points. A total of 26 horses earned points on a weekend of top class racing and so the stage is set for a fascinating renewal of the Charity Turf Challenge!

Racing South Africa staff will be processing manual entries and verifying payments received, so please be patient whilst we conclude this important internal audit phase.

The next big point scoring opportunity is on Saturday 18th of May with the running of the Gr.2 World Sports Betting Greyville 1900, one of the important pointers to the Vodacom Durban July. Watch the press for more details!
