CTS April Yearling Sale 2018
7 years 1 month ago
Spent the morning at Durbanville looking at horses. There are 343 catalogued, of which about 300 remain after withdrawals. 14 of the withdrawals are due to travel restrictions following an AHS incident affecting the Havesham Park contingent.
Today I worked through my shortlist ( mostly focused on fillies with attractive pedigrees)and over the next couple of days will try to see as many of the others as possible.
Also looked at all the Elusive Fort yearlings - in my opinion ( and disclosing my personal interest)
the best value -for -money sire in SA today.
My 12 yearlings that I’m selling are presented by Klipdrif Stud as agent. All were scoped on the farm, and my one withdrawal is due to him failing the scope.
For those who are interested, my lot numbers are
119 filly Vercingetorix- La Fonteine
131 colt. Judpot - Miss Polly
151 colt Querari - Omaticaya
195 colt Marchfield- Soprano Singer
207 filly. What a Winter - Sylvie
222 colt Vercingetorix- Ulwandle
245 filly. Pathfork- Beautiful Noise
255 filly Elusive Fort- Call of the Hunt
275 withdrawn
305 filly Elusive Fort- Her Masters Dream
332 filly Bold Silvano - Waterfall
342 filly Marchfield- Knysna Lagoon
343 filly Elusive Fort- Konfessional
I have not yet decided on reserve values- will see how things go on Thursday.
In past years at this particular sale, my record as a vendor:
2013 current 6 yo’s
6 lots, 5 raced ( one died) 3 winners including Siren’s Call; Forest Fox
2014 current 5 yo’s
8 lots, 8 raced, 6 winners including Ernie; Shall be Free
2015 current 4yos
6 lots, 6 raced, 4 winners including Desert Wisdom
2016 current 3yos
7 lots, 6 runners so far, 3 winners

All the best Peter. Lot 151 looks like it could go for a pretty penny.

My prediction
This will be the last CTS sale
There are very few buyers and yes the top horses will be bought by the usual big owners
But they will pay less than the Jan sale for a similar horse
There will be no or very few buyer for the middle market
Most of the small trainers in Cape Town do not appear to have buyers
The Jooste saga has killed off all his mates and in the past 5 years he had killed off
the small owners
We will know by tonight if this prediction is correct

Any good reason why the TBA should amalgamate?
Can not see one

.....the CTS boys are a lot closer to solving the international export protocols.....and also they have forged much better international connections especially in Europe.....TBA has outsourced the BSA to a bunch of guys that are good at selling to mainly the middle and lower market that hardly exists any more....they now need to staff a sales house with people with bigger and better connections for starters....actually all they need is that Ozzie fella and a few newbies untouched by Jooste's spell..... so get him at TBA to carry on with the export problem and can the rest.....

.....the real indication that the sales houses are moving towards a merger.....is the BSA Cape Mare sale next month.....of the 250 odd mares where almost one third are from Klawervlei.....seems like the olive branches have been extended....

The Klawervlei mares are being sold for a good reason
The Sh1t is hitting the fan for all the Jooste boys and over the next few days is only going to
accelerate
Is the export of critical to the normal owner I think not
Only for the BIG guys
Yes our bloodstock would improve if we could shuttle stallions as per Australia
Tonight is the 'Ides of April" sorry March!!
