I deduced it was Rowdy. Was hoping for a drink at Moutonshoek but I left just before end. He was very busy

2017 369 sold R112 000 000 (491 catalogued)
2018 381 sold R140 700 000 (526 catalogued)
Lots of foreign buyers and lots of breeders buying, a bit muddled for me. Some nice value horses though and some good buys if you were sharp.

Thanks Tigershark. Overall, the Sale felt stronger than last year. The numbers seem to suggest that too.
Whilst I obviously want to buy for as cheaply as possible, I am also relieved that the absolute bloodbath which was so unanimously forecast never happened. Based on that , I must congratulate the BSA team on their efforts.

I was only able to attend on Tuesday, as I had to go away on business Wed and Thurs. Looked at a fair selection of horses. Good quality stock and a strong catalogue. Clearly buyers had saved their ammo for this sale, and overall I think a strong sale in the current market, particularly at the top end. Good to see some of the smaller breeders doing well. A good example is Danika Stud- just 3 fillies offered, but all very well turned out, and prices of 320k, 300k, and 525k for a What a Winter, Elusive Fort and Jackson respectively.
The stats are presented separately for session one and two, but adding them together we get
Aggregate up from R112m last year to R140m this year ( up 25%), Average up from R303k last year to R362k ( up 19%); Median up from R175k last year to R200k (up 14%). Clearance rate 81% vs 82% last year. 387 sold this year vs 369 last year.

Thanks for all the ststs, updates and inputs
I really thought horse racing was dead and maybe the overseas purchases distorted the pic
However if the trend is to be able to sell SA horse flesh at rand exchange rate value ? Then it must give the breeders a bit light at the end of the tunnel .
