CATALOGUE FOR NATIONAL SALE NOW ONLINE!

The catalogue for the 2018 National Yearling Sale is now online and can be viewed live at www.bsa.co.za
Scheduled to take place over three days, the 2018 National Sale is set to take place at the TBA Complex in Germiston on April 24 - 26th.

For the first time in recent years, the sale will be divided into two different sections, with day one devoted to a select session. The first session, which goes up to lot 231, continues into the second day of the National Sale. Each day of trading will commence at 11:30, with the first day ending on lot 170. Day two will see lots up to 350 go under the hammer, while the third and final day will see the remainder of the yearlings pass through the ring.

The cream of South African yearlings will be on offer, once again, at the National Yearling Sale, with top stallions Captain Al, Dynasty, Silvano, Trippi and Var all well represented.

Promising younger sires such as Elusive Fort, Gimmethegreenlight, Querari, Twice Over and What A Winter also have attractive drafts on the sale.

There are also yearlings on the sale sired by proven G1 sire, but now deceased Archipenko, and the hugely promising Galileo sire Nathaniel –whose very first crop produced European Horse Of The Year and five time G1 winner Enable.

As per usual, the National Yearling Sale offers buyers the chance to purchase stock of some of South Africa’s best broodmares and racemares.
No fewer than 13 G1 winners are represented at the National Sale, including two of South Africa’s finest racemares of recent years, in Triple Tiara winner Cherry On The Top and durable Met winner River Jetez. (The latter being an own sister to triple Horse Of The Year Pocket Power).

Observations :
New sire Flower Alley has 28 lots, newish sires Soft Falling Rain has 28, Master of my Fate has 25 while top sires, Dynasty only has 19, Var 16 and Captain Al 17. Interesting to see Duke of Marmalade so well represented with 26 lots. Silvano has a healthy 26 lots with Gimmethegreenlight 23 and Ideal World 20. Querari has 26, Oratorio 22 and What a Winter 21.
The dams are of a high quality and with the surplus of yearlings (and 2 year olds) in a diminishing sport, there are surely value buys to be had. I see many buy backs and "not sold" among the whopping 526 lots on offer.
A buyers market for sure.

IS THERE ANOTHER EAGLE IN THE AVONTUUR NYS DRAFT?

Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm once again look to have an outstanding draft of yearlings on offer at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale next month.

The farm, whose past National Sale graduates include dual Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle, will be represented 16 top class yearlings at the April sale.
A possible standout could well be Watershed (Lot 13) –with this bay colt being a son of the great sire Dynasty and out of champion Pocket Power’s G1 J&B Met winning own sister River Jetez. The latter has already left her mark at stud as the dam of G3 winner Rivarine.

Avontuur’s resident sire Var, SA’s Leading Sire Of 2YOs in 2016-2017, has four lots in the draft. Among them is Serenity (Lot 98) –a bay daughter of G1 SA Fillies Classic winner Bambina Stripes, and Beautiful Mind (Lot 210) –a full-sister to brilliant filly Schiffer.

Standing alongside Var at Avontuur is European champion and proven G1 sire Oratorio. The latter has five yearlings in the draft, headed by Cassimbo (Lot 58) a colt out of a stakes winning daughter of the outstanding sire Cape Cross, Valetorio (Lot 62) –a half-brother to 4 winners including G3 winner She’s A Giver, and Vivant (Lot 69) –a half-brother to five winners including the brilliant G2 winners Cold As Ice (also a winner in Britain) and Live Life. The latter has earned over R4.6 million in stakes thus far!

Oratorio also has fillies out of the smart race mares Varikate (winner of the G2 Merchants) and Without Malice, in the forms of Before The Dawn (Lot 310) and Ode (Lot 327) respectively.

Jet Master’s son Master Of My Fate has made a smashing start to his stud career and the big bay is the sire of Sea Scape(Lot 26) –a grandson of G2 Prix Robert Papin winner Ocean Ridge, while former champion sprinter Captain Of All has two in the Avontuur draft- including Aye Aye (Lot 498) –a beautifully bred half-sister to 7 winners, headed by G3 Byerley Turk hero, and big race contender, Mambo Mime.

Captain Of All’s late, champion sire Captain Al is the sire of Gabreira (Lot 206) –a colt out of G3 placed daughter of outstanding Australian sprinter and top class sire General Nediym.

Avontuur bred the top class Philanthropist filly She’s A Giver, and they offer colt by the Drakenstein based chestnut in the form of Lasata (Lot 176). The latter (bred on the same Philanthropist/Western Winter Cross as Hong Kong star Singapore Sling) is out of a winning half-sister to one of this season’s top 3yos in the form of Sir David Baird.

Four time G1 winning European champion Twice Over has made an explosive start to his stud career and he is the sire of Double The Fun (Lot 418). The latter is a half-brother to four winners, headed by smart stakes winner Milady.

The full pedigrees for each of the Avontuur yearlings can be viewed at www.bsa.co.za

MONKS HOOD BROTHER A STANDOUT!

The Benmarne Stud will offer just four yearlings at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale at the end of April.
However, whatever Benmarne’s draft lacks in size, it makes up for in class and quality, with all four yearlings in the draft due to come up for offer in the Select Session.

The standout in this draft, has to be, Veratrum (Lot 87) -the full-brother to brilliant Benmarne Stud bred recent Gr2 Gauteng Guineas and Gr2 Dingaans winner Monks Hood. One of the best members of his generation, Monks Hood romped to a devastating five and a half length win the Guineas, stamping himself firmly as the best male of his generation, and it is surely only a matter of time before he lands a Gr1 race. Veratrum is out of the smart, stakes placed three time winner Amber Bouquet and is from the family of the multiple G1 winning champion Star Effort.

First of the farm’s yearlings on offer is Bindi (Lot 6), a bay daughter of Oasis Dream’s Gr1 winning son Querari. This filly is a full-sister to the talented filly Angel’s Trumpet and she is from an outstanding international family whose members include champion and hugely successful sire Run The Gauntlet.

Former July winner Bold Silvano (whose 2yos have been in devastating form this season) is the sire of Amber Forever (Lot 222). This filly is a half-sister to Gr1 Thekwini Stakes winner Querari Falcon –who also ran third in the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas. Amber Forever’s dam is a half-sister to the Gr1 winner Follow The Falcon and Savannah Queen.

Railgun (Lot 229) completes the draft, and this Querari colt is a half-brother to 4 smart winners. He is out of four time stakes winner Priceless Flag and hails from the same family as Gr1 Computaform Sprint winner Welcome Guest.

LEGENDARY BIRCH BROS PRESENT SIX AT NYS

Vogel Vlei Stud, home to the record breaking Birch Bros family, will be represented by six quality lots at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

The stud will be offering lots by such prominent stallions as Captain Al, Duke Of Marmalade, Master Of My Fate, Noble Tune and Querari –and their draft is one any serious buyer must take strongly into consideration.

First of the Birch Bros’ draft to come up for sale is Fashion Chic (Lot 70), a filly by red hot sire Querari, whose notable runners include such leading 3yos as Wonderwall and Monks Hood. Fashion Chic, a half-sister to 3 winners, is out of a winning ¾ sister to Equus Champion Special Parade and to nine time stakes winner Solar Symbol.

She is bred on the same Querari/Model Man cross as multiple graded stakes winner Kangaroo Jack.

Believe Achieve (Lot 172) is the name of a colt by champion sire and eight times champion 2yo sire Captain Al. A ¾ brother to G3 Cape Classic winner Eighth Wonder, he is a half-brother to stakes winner Shady World and hails from the same family as legendary champion and increasingly influential broodmare sire Horse Chestnut. This colt is bred on the same Captain Al/Fort Wood cross as G1 winners Captain America and William Longsword.

Cartier Champion and proven G1 sire Duke Of Marmalade is the sire of Duchess Of Africa (Lot 332), a chestnut filly out of a five time winning daughter of leading broodmare sire Al Mufti (a close relation of Duke Of Marmalade). This filly’s dam is a half-sister to the dam of stakes winning millionaire Red Barrel and second dam is G3 winner Rhapsody In Red.

Querari has two in the draft with the former G1 winner is also responsible for Lamborngidi (Lot 441). This bay colt is out of a Sportsworld half-sister to G3 Langerman winner Steiger, who earned over R600 000 in prize money.

Master Of My Fate has made an outstanding start to his stud career and his son (Lot 503) is out of a ½ sister to G2 winner Winterinthewoods, from the family of G1 winners Highland Night and Warm White Night.

Breeders’ Cup runner up Noble Tune is another young sire to have made a pleasing impression with his first runners, and he is the sire of a filly (Lot 517) whose four time winning dam is a half-sister to G1 SA Derby/Daily News 2000 winner North By Northwest.

The Birch Bros, who won a staggering 40 Breeders’ Championships, have been behind the breeding of such legendary champions as Sea Cottage, Colorado King, and Wolf Power–to name but a few.

More recently the farm was responsible for the talented gelding Sniper Shot, a smart winner of the Fever Tree Stakes at Scottsville.

BUSH HILL TO MAKE HISTORY AT NYS

History will be made at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, when Lot 336 comes into the ring.
This flashy grey Judpot colt is the first yearling ever sold at the National Sale by Bush Hill Stud grooms.

Bush Hill’s Warwick Render said off the grey, “This tall scopy colt will mature ino a nice individual.” The colt, a full-brother to a winner, is out of the Caesour mare Akississtillakiss-a full-sister to G2 Gold Bracelet winner Kiss Me Quick. His second dam is champion Kiss Of Peace, and this is the famed family of outstanding sprinters Harry Hotspur and Rotterdam, as well as top class racemare and producer Kournikova.

Warwick was positive and unbeat about Bush Hill’s National draft, commenting, “We have a nice spread of stallions represented in the string, having nine horses by eight different sires, with all of them being good physical individuals, but again with a range of types, from early speed types to your more classic looking.

A string offering something for every kind of buyer we hope.

From a KZN perspective we are obviously thrilled with the run of success that Crusade has been enjoying and we have an exceptional filly by him being a half-sister to Horse Of The Year “Irish Flame”. We also have a Crusade colt out of the stakes placed mare Stella Mia who is from the Bush Hill family of Zirconeum and Stellite. This family is represented in two of our other lots in the Oratorio first foal out of Rhodium, a smart filly, neat and well balanced.

The other a strong sprinting type of colt by Toreador out of Plutonium, making him a half-brother to two black type horses. Both of these represent the Danehill onto the dam line, a cross which has proven very successful in this family in Australia already.

Lot 384 is a very smart and together son of Philanthropist who has just got something about him, he is out of the stakes winning full sister to Biaritz, Countess Corlia.

Treading Water is lot 71, a half-brother to Gr1 placed juvenile Neptune’s Rain by Pathfork from that wonderful Party Time family. He is a great looking colt who was highly regarded by the sales inspectors.

Stakes winning mare Lee Danzig has a typically smart filly, much in the mould that her progeny tend to be all of whom have been smart performers. She is a quality filly.

Lot 233 is a well grown racy filly with substance out of the Kahal half-sister to three stakes winners of 28 races between them, a really smart prospect.”

Pedigrees for the Bush Hill Stud draft can be viewed online at www.bsa.co.za
