The way I understand it, there is no real problem with the surface, as they are trying different settings etc on the power harrow. They went in deeper than before and this caused more kickback. Next time they power harrow, they wont go in as deep. Simple. They are just trying to find the best balance, standard or happy medium as such.
In the long term and as far as Gauteng is concerned, the biggest problem will be the extreme swings or ranges in temperatures. The fact of the matter remains that right now we are under siege from mother nature in Gauteng and KZN with a multitude of meetings having been lost. The same applies to the Western Cape in Winter.
So as much as I remain a staunch supporter of the belief that horses must run on Turf and that any other surface is secondary, the truth is that we need the Poly tracks in order to sustain the Industry. I believe that we will all learn a lot from PE and soon, from Greyville.
It is a big learning curve and the fact that they are trying various levels/depths is actually a good thing. The book of lessons learnt is now being written, for the future.

Louis, iit is hard to understand why the people that build the racecourses do not have guidelines for such things as depth of harrow for varying conditions -hopefully we don't have some smart arse trying to reinvent the wheel!

Observer1, I am sure that the filly was injured as Anton had taken the saddle off very quickly, before the vet had even had the time to phone through. I am sure that the majority of punters would rather the horse was scratched if there was any chance of her running below par and getting beaten. You also don't know how much more damage could have been done. With regards the Polytrack, Guys did go over to Australia to see how they coped with the heat etc and as said a lot of maintenance is always needed and rejuvenation done. This was all built into the cost of GC's track and I am sure the PE one. I gather from Jockeys who rode in Dubai that the Tapeta track went backwards very quickly year on year and they have all the money in the world to get it right. I am sure both tracks here will be fine with the right maintenance.

I went with 2 jockeys to see Luciano about complaints about the kickback after the last meeting and it was determined that they were on a different setting to that on which was previously used. That same setting was used yesterday. While we understand that we are all on a learning curve, re weather conditions etc, and that includes Martin Collins, on the barrier trial day there was no kickback at all on the recommended setting.

Here we go was going to start a new thread but this should suffice....barely a full climate cycle and they are running into problems with the track again and again......according to this SP article the track temp reached 48deg which is way out of parameter as the wax simply becomes too viscous and melts off the surface and can no longer bind the silica/sand and the polymer/plastic and will cause major kick back....now horses are found to have inhaled the kick back and a host of respiratory problems are arising....the record is stuck but no one listening....:S

Today we had minimal kickback onto the horses. Track ran fast. Lots of race day maintainence ,watering of track pre race and putting gallop master during race meeting ,seems to be the right way to go

i love this surface ! The officials have done well by putting this track in . Not a single meeting missed in pe due to rain . The track seems to be running consistently throughout and horses seem to be reproducing there form on it .
If the track manager waters and maintains it consistently it will be a punters dream !
Keep it up the PE crue !
