PE Racing Weekend
Media Release
29 October 2013
It takes more than a deluge of rain to deter the spirits of Eastern Cape racing people and they can look back on a hugely successful weekend at a transformed Fairview track.
Phumelela's hospitality and special events were well supported as lively parties at Cubana and the Racing Association’s cocktail function combined with on course entertainment maintained the warm, social vibe. Despite gloomy weather, several thousand race-goers entered into the festive atmosphere – picnicking, enjoying camaraderie in the whiskey lounge and savouring nourishing cuisine.
On course attendances were encouraging. Feedback from sponsors happy with wider coverage and exposure through the Tellytrack medium was also up beat. From a betting perspective, turnovers spiked 4.5% on the corresponding meeting last year. This is especially laudable as the entire Sunday program was staged on the new and resilient Polytrack surface. It would have understandable if horseplayers had held back on their wagers as most runners were untried on the new surface, yet turf form held up well and punters wagered with conviction.
In racing highlights, the RA Stakes was won in a tight finish of promising three year olds by flashy grey Top Jet. Then on Sunday, Disco Al kept rocking to clinch the R350 000 Betting World Algoa Cup.
Feedback from jockeys was positive about the surface with no complaints about kickback. And trainers, together with veterinary service providers, commented on fewer issues with horses’ legs post race.
A vital component of social responsibility programs is the charitable support initiated by concerned owners through the auspices of the Racing Association. They are to be commended on raising R130 000 through a well-supported auction, proceeds which will help the Eastern Cape Horse Care Unit continue their outstanding rehabilitation work.

Is this not the same auction that was posted on
the site? No mention of ABC and the early bids by Flash , Len, Oscar etc
only credit to RA or am I being too critical?

Chippy liked the track
Poly diff class but still needs time to settle under racing conditions
Would be nice to have winning post lollipop on outside of track... Turf win post is taken down when poly races are on
Maybe 16 runners too many for tight track

It's amazing that horse racing in South Africa had survived for so many years before all this tinkering and stupidity.......
Good luck to them all. Strip all the assets and build tracks that have no place in a climate such as South Africa and its hugely varying regions.
OR
The jocks are babies....tell them to suck it up.
I know which one I'm on and I side with the jocks......

Well then we know who to blame right????? The poly was supposed to be the saving grace even though the most successful poly track is being used in England where the climate is NOTHING like PE.
Even in England they don't race on the poly 24/7, in fact mostly in winter or at night? (Help me out here hibs please)
Anyway, history will repeat itself again and again.....n poepol bly n poepol
