Guys, nice input. I own shares in two racehorses. As Scotia put it, u have a high when your horse wins, and the lows are when u have to keep digging in your pocket if your horse does not perform.

Another low is trying to get your horse out of your current trainer when u want to send to another trainer. (Scotia knows what i am taking about).

Although syndication is the way to go, it can also have a fair share of problems.

I charge R5100 plus vat and half of that is taken up just by the grooms wages and the horses food. No hay, stabling, assistant, kit, petrol and the multitude of extras or me being here 7 days a week.

In uk fees are about £12000 a year for average yard. The Stoutes,Cecils and other top Newmarket yards are more.
On top of that you have fuel, vets, jockeys, entrys and vat.
Sometimes you get a couple of months a year when its in the field for a rest, some trainers dont charge.
If you can afford it buy an unraced one with good pedigree and you might hit the jackpot.
Hibs ive wondered if you have thought about getting some ABC members together for a syndicate..

Question for everyone.
If you had a unraced 2yr old and a older consistent handicapper
who would you let train them ?

Where do you buy your horses from ?
Whats the best sale in SA?
What is your VAT,percent wise ? UK is 20%( ridiculous)

Hi DTF and RF,with the farrier acc and vat I would work on R600 for 10% plus your vet bill which we try keep as low as possible. I am based at Summerveld and we travel as far as Johannesburg. Have found the National sales overpriced and plenty are bought back and raced by the breeder or sold on another sale or off the farm. Used to love the Vintage sale. Our vat is 14%. Shout if there is anythin else you would like to know. Regards Craig

Make it fun and own a leg in 4 horses....totalling the cost of one horse per month...so you have 4 runners with 4 chances. And only get involved if you can afford it, dont think its a "get rich quick scheme!"..Biggest part of owning a racehorse is LADY LUCK.Pierre Jourdaan didnt know he was 60k and Divine Jet didnt know he was millions....if he is no good then dont hold on to him too long ,find a good home. The cost of those few extra months of hoping for that win add up and when he does win you will be lucky to have been able to break even...

Craig you are to be rewarded for openly making yourself available on this site, I got a feeling that CTS book 2 will be something similar to the Equimark Vintage/Autumn sale and maybe the projeny a good few 1st season sires on sale that may not attract too much attention and go for a steal.
