Are the likes of Hollywood and World of Sport raping the industry as P tell us or are they just offering a better service than the Tote. Irrelevant of court cases etc, do you believe it to be morally correct ?

Hibs, if a betting site funded by the Taliban wanted a paid ad on abc would you consider it ? Or would it be morally incorrect ?

i mostly play the open bets with bookies....but i still say that thats wrong.....the tote (not just here...but in every country),has a very important role to play...and i think racing will progress the day bookies are not allowed to lay open bets.....
firstly ,imagine the size of the pools.....that in itself is a hype and will get people interested in betting again.
the average swinger pool at the moment may be around R100 000 per race....i think the tote is being short changed of about R300 000.....i dont have the figures but judging by what i see punters taking at bookies...i think the pools could be close to R300 000 per race....i think it could be more....even exotics...bookies are laying now...that is also wrong......
we all talk of hong kong racing ....there are no bookies there...very healthy racing market...
if open bets are banned from being taken at bookies....hence the pools increase...but then the tote must adjust their takeout...
lower their %...and there will be less lopsided payouts when the pools are what it supposed to be....and most importantly...less manipulation...
i rember in the early days...kzn bookies...never priced up for 2 year old races till race time...then 1 bookie would go to the tote and put a R1000 ON A HORSE...opens up short on the tote...and they priced up according to the tote....thats manipulation.....

until the powers that be adopt an attitude of it is not what the punters can do for us but what can we do for the punters i will continue to punt the open bet...they continue to behave like ostriches amid calls for dialogue with punters and they see it not necessary to have punter representation on their various boards commitees etc ..

Gambling is a selfish addiction and if you want to give yourself the best chance back horses at the best price you can get - Loyalty does not pay the rent

I hereby declare that i am a bookmaker and have been a punter from the year 1967 till 1992 when i became a bookmaker. In my youth and school days i took 10c jackpots with the local bookmaker in Ixopo every meeting. So the open bet has been here since at least 40 years. Please understand that every winning open bet is subject to 6% tax so please understand that the tax generated is shared between racing and the province that uses the money to repair roads, build hospitals etc.The punter has the choice to use the Tote or the Bookmaker for his bet no one puts a gun to his head to go to the bookmaker. Why must the punter fund the prizegiving for the owner. The punter in my mind is KING not the owner. The Tote operators do not give the same service as bookmakers and you cannot blame the punters who prefer to use bookmakers
