Yip you right about that Tigershark.....that incident doesn't come up first, all his accolades come up first.
No doubt about it Gavin is a world class rider, it's just he has tainted his legacy with that minute of madness.

Re: GAVIN LERENA WHIP GATE
2 weeks 3 days agoBut is that what comes up when you do press enter?
As stated previously, I don't have a dog in the fight. I have not had Gavin ride any of my horses and have never had a conversation with him. I am however surprised at the level anger towrds him while there is outpouring of understanding for Fortune and Van Niekerk from the same quarter. What about Veal and the punter...wasn't Brandon Morgenrood warned off for 5 years for a similar incident? Didn't Fortune admit to tinkering with the weights in PE? Muzi almost sent a jock over the rails at Greyville, was he suspended for year? Facts and emotions are never the best of friends.
There are currently a few jockeys that would be able to cut it in Hong Kong or internationally based on their skills, work ethic and professionalism;
R Fourie
C Zackey
G Lerena
C Murray
L Mxothwa
I will never condone the action taken by Lerena but can at least make an argument as to why.
lerena will never cut it in hk...NEVER

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held at its offices in Turffontein on 8 August 2019, Jockey M Yeni was charged with a contravention of Rule 72.1.11.
The particulars of the charge being that he, whilst riding the horse MR GREENLIGHT, intimidated and interfered with Jockey L Hewitson when he took his hand off his left side rein and placed it on Jockey Hewitson’s arm during the running of the 2nd Race at Greyville Racecourse on 27 July 2019.
And then there was this which in my mind is the closest we have to the Lerena issue.
My opinion penalty rule where jockeys are band from X date to Y date is outdated. Take for example a cape rider serving his ban in August 2025. Would have not been any sort of Penalty. Same applies to a PE based Jockey.
Penalty should be based on number of race meetings they cant ride.

Biggest shite you have ever wrote on here....'World class' by south african standards jah. He is quite a poor judge from the front....He cant ride frontrunners at all...except the exceptional horses ofcos....who just needs a steer

The Stats from the last 5 years don't seem to bear this out considering the wins and strike rate and the jocks he competed with. Fourie, Kennedy, Khumalo, De Melo, Zackey, Hewitson

Has anyone mentioned mitigating circumstances? Surprised no one is mentioning how bad a rider Gates is (reckless), and the multiple riding offences he has committed ....

Having viewed both Lerena and Striker incidents I am of the view that both Gates and Yeni created a dangerous situation and couldn't straighten their mounts.Remember if that half ton horse bangs onto the jockeys leg or even throw's him over ,the outcome could be dire.
The jockeys that caused these incidents are the catalyst in these circumstances and should receive a far more severe penalty than those that responded to their actions.
I think the NHA handled this one correctly and took all of the circumstances and rules of consistency into account. The only problem I see is the delay in finalising this matter coupled with the jockeys championship conclusion whereby Lerena like Hewitson and I'm sure a couple others played the system into their favour.
That's my view.
