Straight Each Way Winners...?

Trying to ask a fun positive racing question...

Years ago (and my biggest straight win), was a Leon Erasmus pony at the Vaal. A friend and I were having drinks at TAB in Pretoria area as we had the day off and my mate liked the slots.

Now I am not a gambler so I was focussed on the horse racing. In the very last race there was a Leon Erasmus outsider staring me down... Early Call was around 15/1 but by the time I took it, it was around 35/1. So I put R700 EW down.

I was watching the prices on Interbet and 10 minutes before the off someone dumped huge money on it and brought it down to about 9/1. The confidence grew. And they jumped.

Leon's horse was midfield around the turn, but halfway down the straight the turbos kicked in... I started shouting my friends name to have him look up at a racing screen, but next moment he hit the slots jackpot and won R7000... and then Leon's pony wins and I win somewhere around 26K. What followed I would rather not say (was around 2008)...but...

What was your biggest straight bet ever...not exotics, straight EW?

Lovely story and brought a smile to me face...

A few years ago, my brother in law and I went out for a lunch. After many bottles of red wine we decided to go home and chill and open a bottle of brandy. Needless to say, the racing channel was on and the confidence level was sky high. We put R1000 into the online account and started messing about. As the drinks went down, the balance went up. We eventually got to 10k and then he passed out. I was still standing, barely.

Now, 3 weeks from then I was due to travel to Europe (my first time EVER leaving SA). Maybe I should cash out the 10k and keep it for spending money? But at that point, rational thinking wasnt even possible.

Then, I see a race in Haydock... A 7/10 favourite and at 6/1 shot is a horse called ONE FOR HARRY. My best friends name is Harry so Im thinking its a sign from god. So what do I do? I take R60000/R10000 straight wins ONE FOR HARRY!!

At the 2nd last hurdle he is in front but the 7/10 walks past him like he is standing still. At the last the favourite jumps in front and HARRY is a clear 2nd... All i know is that Ryan Day is riding this horse like he knows my money was down. He lifted this horse up on the line to come back and beat the favourite.

My biggest straight bet, and it won! It was pure luck and a result of a drunken afternoon. Needless to say, I had such a Euro party that year, I will never, EVER forget!

What a guy...pitty he got double jabbed.

So the online story, a lawyer mate (office) and another mate got stuck late evening in his office, drinking brandy. Was about 19:00 when they called and said they were watching and punting UK horses online, and dopping. They asked me to come over to the office and have a brandy, and help them pick ponies....f...l...a...s....h...I stopped in his parking lot.

I said to them I needed time to study but will give them a wild guess. Cannot recall what form I used. Anyway... they had extreme faith in me and took R2k bets on my selections...

First runner around the bend stone cold last, but it finds inspiration down the straight and flies up to win on the line....They freak out and we down a bottle of brandy...

Long story short, by some luck I select 4 winners in a row. Utter luck, but the disaster that it caused I am not willing to post on a public forum. Still a great memory...

Holy Mackerel! Killer...

I did hit a 200/1 win multiple with R10 once...:pinch:

You don't get these numbers as a professional though. As we all know multiples are for fun or daily punishment. All you really need is 2 from 3 places to be profitable and make racing pay. My record is 29 places in a row (about 40% won)...

So one day I took R800 and said to myself, only place bets - doubled up...By day 9 I had 24K (one place a day), but could not get myself to risk the 24K again, after 9 days of stress I cashed out and needed the money...But I learnt a lot.

Now I just cash in straight bets and never stress anymore....LOL :P

I can imagine it sounds like that. But after the ups and downs I have personally had I actually believe these guys...

For the glass half empty folks I should have rather asked 'your biggest loss or screw up punting?' So your preferred melodrama follows.

Now mine wasn't just clicking the wrong horse on Interbet, it was losing a fiancé, probably 200k in lost school fees times 10+ years and perhaps worst of all, many telling me I was crazy to have an empty belief it could be done. Years and years of failure and coming face to face with my shortcomings. Painful self reflection and loss of countless joyous hours I should have been in my prime and applying myself to something 'worthy'. I should have studied medicine it would have been way cheaper, easier and I would have started making money year 6 or 7.

And yet, I would not change a thing. NO regrets...One of the best things, and yet most painful, you learn after about 10 years of trying to find a faint profitable light in erratic statistical darkness, is that it is much like the story of a well known Buddhist described by Chogyam Trungpa.

He was meditating on a mountain for much of his life and reached the moment of Nirvana. He was so joyous he threw flowers in the air and ran down the mountain to the town below to share his experience. On his way down he met some of the villagers. They started beating him and making ridicule. So he ran back up the mountain.

Now can we get back to some positivity and laughter on this thread please.😁💰

My biggest loss on a horse was R10 000 can't remember it's name but it was beaten by its stable companion with the name Grizzly King or something like that back in the days

Still a kid in 1980, card call for the Natbrew Tankard. I “bought” a horse for $100 abt half my monthly salary. I can still remember the mayor turning around to look at me and like saying “who’s this kid?”. The horse was subsequently backed in from 10/1 to 7/2. He won and I collected $1000. That horse came down to Joburg and beat Foveros at a huge price in the Omega Gold. Again, money on him. His name, Strike It Rich.
