Earning the minimum wage is no fun for anyone in that position and I feel for each person that finds themselves in this dilemma. We do unfortunately have a problem in South Africa that most people spend more than they earn quite willingly and then demand someone else to make up their self inflicted shortfall. One of my old bosses used to say it's not what you earn but what you spend that will break you. How right he was and something everybody should take to heart. Still sad though how tough life is for most people and the difficulty to escape poverty. A job is such a blessing and should be appreciated more by those in the lucky position to be employed.

....so when is this sh!t finally going to be sorted out.....do the grooms still have a legitimate gripe because certain trainers are not complying ...or is it a case of them wanting more than minimum wage and an improvement of living conditions.....have their initial demands been granted and they are now pushing the envelope just wanting more and more....and now want to hold racing to ransom....is there going to be a follow up investigation and meetings with people involved to get to the bottom of the protest....or will it share some space under the carpet until the next time.....

As I wrote yesterday, it looks official that Ormonde Ferraris has turned up training. What a sad time for racing.

Veteran Ferraris quits training after grooms’ protest
A potentially serious situation was diffused at Turffontein on Saturday when racing officials persuaded a group of about 50 protestors assembled on the racetrack to leave the course so that racing could continue following its interruption after Race 2 on Champions Day.
While racing resumed after a delay of about an hour – the result of a grooms’ protest against working conditions – one sad and unfortunate consequence was the decision by veteran trainer Ormond Ferraris to hand in his licence.
The 87-year old Ferraris, upset and severely stressed by the grooms’ actions, had to be taken to hospital for a check-up and observation when his staff decided to desert the yard around 4am on Saturday morning. He was released on Saturday afternoon and told Turf Talk on Sunday: “I have made my decision, I am giving up training.”

....I do believe that Phum cannot keep burying the head in sand or simply pass the buck claiming it is not their indaba....this happened on their turf(excuse the pun) ....they should look and think long and hard before issuing a statement and actions to remedy the situation....I for one will not be keen to go back to a race meeting as who needs this crap.....something was very off about the turnout yesterday and grooms meeting at 5am in the morning to plan a protest send chills down one's spine...and the PTB obviously had a heads up that there was going to be trouble....as ominously the switching of parade rings may have had something that the skint security was unable to cover....the lack of adequate security in the face of a threat is not a good response either....I do hope that something can be done to prevent this from becoming a on going problem....:S

Please... do NOT lay this at Phum's door. This is SA , it is a Nationwide problem, in all Industries.
All that remains is for how long Employers are going to take it.

The comments of Patrick Davis says it all...
We have nothing to do with this.......
Both him and Vee are referring everyone to go and speak to the other......
What can go wrong??
Happy retirement mr. Ferraris

.....are we advocating that we pack up and walk away....not wanting to get involved by saying is not our problem is certainly not going to solve anything either....

Yes. Correct. The problem is not that of Phum or NHRA. They do not employ the grooms. But, it is the norm nowadays to bring them into these issues, because they are perceived to be wealthier than Trainers. After the grooms are given an office, what next ?
Where does it end ? Company cars, fat salaries, spend allowances..... a Lear Jet maybe ?
This Country lacks leadership and Law and Order. Simple.
SA Racing as it is, does not make Economical sense to Owners. That's a fact. But, when it becomes unreasonably expensive, there will be a mass exodus. Already the middle market is in dire straits... So, what will the big Owners race against and for what stakes, in 5 horse fields...?
Mr Ferraris is not the last. If this shit hits here, then I also have to review my options, in spite of just having had my best Sale ever. This mindless and ongoing "we demand" can only go on for so long.
