Leon Erasmus fined 60 k
9 years 9 months ago
Think i forgot to post this last week
An inquiry was held at the offices of the NHA at Turffontein Racecourse on Friday 14 August 2015.
Mr Erasmus was charged with a contravention of Rule 73.2.3 in that a specimen taken from the horse CAPTAIN ALI, prior to the running of the 4th race at the Vaal Racecourse on 14 May 2015, was found to contain the prohibited substance Caffeine, a prohibited substance in terms of Rule 73.4.
Mr Erasmus pleaded not guilty to the charge, but was found guilty of the charge.
After considering all the facts relevant to this matter, the Board imposed a penalty of a fine of R60 000.00, of which R20 000.00 is wholly suspended for a period of 2 years on condition that Mr Erasmus is not found guilty of an offence in terms of Rule 73.2 over the said period.
In applying the relevant guidelines when determining the sum of the penalty to be imposed, the Inquiry Board took cognisance of the particular mitigating circumstances relevant to this matter, including the following:
1. the fact that the only prior contravention by Mr Erasmus under Rule 73.2 involved a Class 5 substance;
2. the fully co-operative and frank manner in which Mr Erasmus approached the inquiry proceedings.
Furthermore, CAPTAIN ALI, in terms of Rule 72.3, is disqualified from the 4th race run at the Vaal Racecourse on 14 May 2015.

Considering they get up so early in the morning surely horses are allowed to have a cup of coffee before the races

I am hearing a spate of positives in KZN are being dealt with as we speak. The rumour mills says at least 5 trainers have been caught and one Highveld trainer who returned a positive in one of the KZN features. Its all rumours thus far but I am told the Highveld trainer got caught with a steroid positive and that a harsh penalty is going to be given allegedly involving the banning of the horse running for a year.

Cannot understand why the NHA will not differentiate between "medication still in the system" and "performance enhancing substances" .........................intent is surely extremely relevant!

This sort of reporting is pretty useless imo, I have no clue what this drug does and whether it is used purely for enhancing performance or has some other purpose. It is the same with all these enquiries. I think they need to be more specific in their explanations as it is easy for your every day idiot like me to think that they are just a load of cheating farkers. I am not convinced this is the case. Gives racing a bad name without it necessarily deserving one.
If it is performance enhancing, I would say again, the penalties I have seen would only encourage me to do it more!!!! (if I was that way inclined of course!

glycosides, antiarrhythmic agents, re
spiratory stimulants, tranquillizers,
benzodiazepines and caffeine.

I think their classification system differentiates hence the different penalties
