Fairview Friday
10 years 9 months ago
Had a quick look at the betting for Friday and rather amazed to see both my runners marked up as favourite, albeit weak at 4/1 field in both cases.
Both Sylvie and King of the Deep are drawn wide on the poly, while it is KotD first run on the surface. Sylvie has run 27 times for 1 win and 13 places. KotD 22 runs for 2 wins and 2 places.
Trainer comments from mikebassracing.com state
King of the Deep: "drawn a bit wide but on his CT form and with luck in the running should have a chance" and
Sylvie "if she overcomes the wide draw without doing too much, she will run a competitive race"
Very sensible and logical comments, and exactly what they have said to me directly, but certainly far from calling them good things.
Both races are full fields and are competitive handicaps.
Both horses fit and well and trying as always, but no value at these prices.
Sylvie should be 7/1 or better and King of the Deep closer to 10/1.

R1 So many negatives and inconsistencies etc probably hard to have a firm fancy and a race to avoid. Despite the break and the stable seemingly not being in the best form I'll chance Wings In Motion. Those with least negatives are probably Jay Belle and Promising. I could write an essay on this one but you'll be pleased to hear I'm not going to!
R2 Simmering for me is very short in the market, the horse has yet to prove a true liking for the surface and though much better drawn here, has 4.35l to find with Iberian Express on their last meeting on the Poly, over 1200. The latter's poor draw is likely to prove a big hurdle but he could still run into a place. Munaaseb found good market support lto and gets blinkers but also has a high draw and that coupled with the drop in d may not be in his favour. Thatcatcanrun seems to have a preference for the surface and could well prefer this longer d, of those coming out the Zenith form line I think that he may fare best despite the high draw. Estrella also well worth a mention over this d from a good draw with a light weight, but she is up against the boys again and not sure the blinkers are a good idea as they were removed after one run last time they were tried. Sound of Thunder's run in his Poly debut 3 runs back was not the worst form in the world considering the high draw, from a much better draw here he is the R1 e/w nutter horse. Another Sham horse, Seattle Saint, should be checked if getting a run. The real value in the race though could be Bold Epic, disappointing lto over 1600, the return to 1300 together with a stronger jockey from poll position, and blinkers going back on, make BE a decent e/w shout for me... Bold Epic x Thatcatcanrun x Iberian Express
R3 I was with Storm Lily lto and it seemed she did not get the clearest of runs approaching the final stages and appeared to be eased towards the finish. I'll stick with her here in the hope that she can again run handy, appreciate the extra d and find no traffic problems in denying Aspen Winter. A few with chances for the trifecta spot, none particularly convincing so I'll hope the Shams will find something more from Shining Silvia on her PE debut. If not, Royal Jubilee or Venita are the most likely imo to take her place.
R4 But for the very wide draw I would have been very keen on Priceless Asset lto and still chanced him. The draw is still not the best but I will again stick with him here hoping the extra d will suit and allow him to come through and time his challenge right to deny another of my selections lto, Liquification. More open than just those two though... Colonel Knox and Irish Hall have chances at big odds imo and both Emerald Magic and Western Wonder were not disregarded lightly... Priceless Asset x Liquification x Colonel Knox

R5 Very open with a number of the runners finishing in close proximity of each other in recent outings, plenty possibles. I'm going with Blue Horizon Bay which somewhat worryingly means I quite fancy three from a stable which rarely gets one in the winner's box of late but I'll be trying a small stable patent nevertheless. Red Silvano might have got the vote from a better draw but still could run a place though I prefer Black Balladeer for the exacta spot. King Of The Deep could well be involved but is a watching brief for me. Back down in d Vital Match is worthy of a nibble at big odds imo. Although not placed in 9 d attempts he has rarely been far off the places on this surface on which he seems to run well, high draw though. If Divine Invitation hets a run he is likely to be involved and could follow-up.
R6 In another with options aplenty, I'm chancing Five Moons who was run over a d far too short for him on PE debut when coming off an 11 week break lto, His form from Gauteng is respectable and despite a high draw on the Turf inside track, he placed for the first time over this d in his last run there. Bride's Dowry and I Got You Babe look to be lively dangers with Born For Ballet and Marry Me Mullins perhaps battling for the quartet spot.
R7 No need to say it really but... another open affair! That said, I do think Ruby Sunset could be some value, albeit somewhat of a "gamble". Although her 1l 3rd over 1400 on the turf lto was something of a shock at the huge odds of 80/1, it is possible the horse has had some issues. Her maiden form was respectable but she then had a 21 week break and her form entirely deserted her thereafter. Blinkers may also have had an effect, though her last two runs as a maiden were also with the blinkers. She then had a 34 week break and was slowly away when well beaten in her return run over 1200, which is probably too short also. Could equally have been a flash in the pan run but my hunch is that she will confirm the improvement see in the run lto. If bringing that form to the Poly and fully seeing out the 200 further then on 3rd run since the rest she could prove very competitive here. Evening Rose for me is the biggest danger, having beaten a few of these rivals over c/d when drawn widest of all 4 runs back. Her recent turf form has perhaps not been her best but is still respectable and she has run well from wide draws on both Poly efforts. Prairy Star and Lady Silvia my choices to complete the trifecta and quartet.
R8 No easier in the hopefully lucky last. I think the Uren stable could hold a strong hand here though. Sudden Surprise arrives from Bingo where he had a consistent and successful career. He ran on the Vaal turf three runs back in higher company and was not disgraced, he could have more in the tank and prove too strong here. Regular pilot in Bingo, Muzi, has been booked. If that is not the case, then stablemate Tall Ship could be the one to take advantage at decent odds having cracked another good draw. Fascinating Filly and Fort Orzak my trifecta and quartet selections.
Be(s)t of luck to all

Race 4: Liquification at 12/10 is ridicoulous imo formlines are weak, had plenty of chances I'm with Sapphire Sea looks to be crying out for distance around 10/1 e/way for me, im ready for the egg on my face
Race 8: Sudden Surprise rated 97 on sand but 57 on grass, imo he is too low and will take a lot of beating off that mark around 6/1 that is my main play of the day
Best of luck to all
