July Gallops
10 years 11 months ago
The important Vodacom Durban July gallops, designed to give racing fans a final look at their fancies in action before they step out onto the turf at Greyville on Saturday, July 5 for the biggest challenge of their careers, take place at the big race venue on Thursday, June 26.
The 16 finalists and the four reserve runners that will be carded for the R3.5-million, Grade 1 event, will take part in timed gallops at Greyville from 7am with the gallops being televised live on Tellytrack. Runners that are not based in the Durban area will have to complete timed and televised gallops at their home base and these gallops will be shown on Tellytrack after the completion of proceedings in Durban.
The traditional July gallops are open to the public at no cost and free coffee, cinnamon buns and doughnuts will be available to help take the edge off the cool early morning conditions.
In addition, coffee from Caffe Pronto and pastries will be on sale while for those wishing to watch the gallops in comfort, a continental breakfast at a cost of R60 a head will be available in the Durban View Restaurant by calling 031-314-1780 to make a booking.
At the conclusion of the gallops, trainer and on-course television presenter Paul Lafferty together with trainer and former Vodacom Durban July winning jockey Garth Puller will review the gallops and will head a panel discussion on the chances of the contenders while a Sangoma will throw the bones to predict the winner of this year’s race and the famous July beans will give their agricultural opinion on the outcome of the race.
To add an extra touch of colour, glamour and beauty to the occasion, a number of models in July fashions will be there to distract the fans between gallops.

7 A.M................for the early birds. Free coffee and cinnamon buns for breakfast. Great tradition that must be continued, back in the day the July Gallops was a major event for our elders.
