Before the Bold Ruler era.....he was predicted by very astute pedigree peelers.....his dam sire Discovery was hailed as the dam sire of the era while his sire was a son of Nearco that was highly rated.....to compare him to Louis The King is laughable......RMG was no star and Black Minnaloushe is just a slightly above average son of Storm Cat.....I would not be touting him to be our next Jet Master or Captain Al should he hit the breeding barns later....:S.

But that's the point.

Secretariat had his doubters. He was never supposed to last the distance at Belmont Park and look what he did. It may be arrogant to say that LTK is a dead-cert or to compare him to Secretariat - especially when his own trainer has mentioned that there are some staying doubts. But there is a very distinct possibility that he could do it.

This is the kind of situation that makes a mockery of breeding theories - to the delight of those who appreciate the Thoroughbred as the epitomy of athleticism - and the sort of intriguing story that makes racing what it is.

As for his potential stud value - that comes later. He's got a race on Saturday ;)

Two separate issues discussed here - one concerning the possible future potential of LTK as a stallion, which would be affected (at least commercially) by the first issue, which is whether he will win on Saturday.

For me, IF he stays, he will win, if he does not stay, the race is wide open - so the next question is whether he is any value at his current odds - to me (given that there is some stamina doubts) definitely not.

So who can pick up the spoils if LTK fails to stay - Chris Gerber mentioned in his interview with Andrew Bon that the Laird stable is going to make sure that the Derby will be a true run race - As You Like probably being the one to make sure of that, and failing that Earl of Derby could be sacrificed as pacemaker - bottom line is that the pace will be on.

Given a strong pace, the winner would need to stay every yard, who fits the bill?

As You Like's siblings (one being by Var) have won over 2000, so chances are he is LIKELY to stay - also he has only a length or so to make up on LTK - so 8/1 fair value imo

Bouclette Top - can't find any evidence one way or the other, on whether he would stay or not - even though running on in most of his starts, it does not necessarily mean he will stay - so I prefer others at current odds

Gone Baby Gone - ran on well over 2000 (easily holding Flight Warning on that run) , so chances are that the extra 450m won't pose a problem - it puzzles me however that Marcus is taking the ride on the stable companion Ilitshe (who only just holds FW on the Derby Trial) - so for me Marcus is on the wrong one (especially as I's sibling Mining Prospect seems best over 1400-1600) - 14/1 looks good each-way value to me

Atomic Rush - won easily over 2200, but then got beaten easily by Iitshe - so on that line, should also be held by GBG

Ilitshe - Not without a chance - but I prefer the stable companion at the odds

Judicial - could be the real dark horse here - dam is by Dolpour so should be able to see out the trip - poor last run (second run after a long rest), but ran on well behind Ilitshe in the Derby Trial (first run after a long rest, so could improve on that) - 50/1 looks tempting

So for me both Gone Baby Gone and Judicial looks the value at current odds

Woodruff confident that Louis will stay so that is good enough for me. Can only see As You Like and Bouclette Top upsetting him.

It is all systems go at Turffontein Racecourse as organisers prepare for a whopper final leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown and the ever popular Intercontinental Village this Saturday. Both existing and new sponsors have shown their support for Africa’s richest race day.

The running of the much anticipated R2 million SA Derby (which the public’s hero ‘Louis the King’ will be fighting for in order to complete his Triple Crown ambition) as well as the third leg of the Triple Tiara racing series, the WilgerbosdriftSA Oaks will have the expected 15 000 strong crowd on their feet.

It’s a huge day of racing and one that generates capacity crowds every year with more than R7 million in prize money up for grabs this year, the Presidents Champions Challenge alone worth a staggering R2 million.

SASCOC has once again shown their support for the Raceday as naming rights partner to the Triple Crown whilst, Wilgerbosdrift Stud, continues their generous sponsorship of the entire Triple Tiara series.

Stud owner Mary Slack says she’s excited about the partnership.

“Wilgerbosdrift is delighted to be associated with the Triple Tiara, three top class races that cater for the countries best fillies.

It is essential that fillies race for excellence in South Africa and are rewarded accordingly. “Superior fillies produce champion racehorses.”

The continued alliance with Distell will see them as the Champions Day pouring rights partner through premium brand Gordon’s London Dry Gin. New sponsor Martin Collins has been welcomed to the stable of existing sponsors.

Phumelela Sales Executive Clyde Basel said that Champions Day for great horseracing and the Intercontinental Village attracts diverse cultures and nationalities, all whom come together to make for a spectacular day’s entertainment. “We are most grateful to have such powerful sponsors and partners on the day and an appeal to the public is to come out to Turffontein Racecourse with your family and enjoy a unique day’s entertainment”
