Why Is Cape Racing A Failure?

You can have as many prawn festivals and student days as you like, you won't save Cape Racing until you solve:

THE PERCEIVED CROOKEDNESS OF CAPE RACING.

Until racing in the Cape gets a cleaner image(ask any punter why and you'll get this answer),none of the current problems can possibly be solved.

Although I disagree that Cape Racing is a failure I agree 100% filling up a race course with non punting students that are there for the party and wont be back is window dressing that will solve zip...time there was a meeting for the long suffering punters that have been around for years and continue to support the industry against all odds...pay back is the way to go paying it forward should be reserved for movies..

How do you perceive the supposed crookedness of Cape Racing,or are you taking the 5th?

The most common definition of failure I can find is "Failure is the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective", so unless the objective in the Western Cape was to make 20+years of losses, I think it would qualify as failing!

Western Cape has some of the best ingredients for good racing, yet somehow the recipe fails!

That would solve nothing - You need new punters not those that are on their way to the funeral home - Within that party of students there are some that will have an addictive nature - Why wait until the Casino puts on a concert and takes first strike at them -

The Queen's Plate is an example of somebody doing something instead of hoping something would be done for them - I hope that student day grows from year to year

There is much going on in racing right now, not least of which is the worry about the home of racing in Cape Town.

The W Cape Gambling Board recorded that for the financial year 2012/13 they collected revenues from gambling (% share of total):

(7%) R24,562,502 in tax revenue from (30) Bookmakers
(2%) R7,698,233 in taxes from the single Totalisator

They all get to bet on everything. Cape Town gets their share of soccer and stuff. In season the racing is probably the amoung the best on offer. 75% of the year has excellent weather for racing. There is a big overseas ownership base in the Cape. It's horse sickness free. There are plenty of breeders in the Cape who support racing, horses bought are amoung the most expensive and high class. There is a tremendous depth of "good" trainers (trainers who have horses that can consistently win the biggest races). The KZN season has plenty of Cape Town interest to pull CT punters to follow.

So it is a good question indeed, why is Cape racing such a failure?

PE has a standalone Friday, but Gauteng and KZN always carry a standalone on the weekend. Kenilworth is rarely standalone and is always a B event with either Gauteng or KZN.

In March for eg. Turffontein is every Saturday with CT on 4 of the 5. KZN races every Friday night, with supporting standalone Sundays and a few Wednesdays to give 3 meetings a week for a few weeks. Cape Town has only 1 midweek meeting in March. Having said all that, CT made lots of money during the Ghost meetings during the flu, so who says more racing makes more money. There isn't an easy answer it seems.

Heinrich bud, you miss the point a little I think... JAP said "perceived" and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind he is 100% correct. I PERCEIVE Cape racing as the most crooked in SA, I trust no part of racing down there. Until they correct that perception I can't see them going anywhere
