Jockeys earnings
11 years 7 months ago
I am trying to work out what jockeys today get per ride and what they get percentage wise on the stakes they earn.
The last i heard was that they got R600 per ride plus 7% of the stake but some of the better jockeys had contracts at higher levels.Im not knocking the better jockeys i would like to know what they get as some off them basically end up with nothing when they retire.Im thinking of guys like Jimmy Anderson,Bertie Hayden,Colin Lee jockey then trainer. It is very sad when people of this calibre are thrown on the compost heap.
Thank You

I'm not sure exactly but I think Tex has made sure the guys have insurance and other benefits nowadays (that's how I remember it)

To many jockeys.
i assume most jocks are registered as a CC or SOLE trader. so they pay provisional tax every 6 months. allowing them to write off expenses they incur.
assuming they earn 750 per ride before paying tax. i estimate u need to ride 40 rides per month or 480 per season. that would give u 360000 to cover costs of living, travel, equipment , insurance, agents etc
This season only 34 riders would meet the mark of 480 rides for the season. There have been 88 different jocks ride excluding work riders and appies.
All this on top of the very likely risk of being injured or suspend at anytime.
Hard working people they deserve to earn more.

In reply to Easy,we all need to try and save for our old years,in todays Natal mercury you have a guy in his 70's who is under big pressure. We put all our faith in jockeys to ride our horses but i think to many of them end up with nothing. It is rife in every industry but if racing can help them to save for the future it should be done for the dignity of life. When ever someone in racing passes away, they leave wifes, children etc and people dont even think of them again.Martin Schoeman, all the guys killed in the plane crash,Peter Dillon,Michael Airey,Peter Seig, etc, etc.Barry Steenkamps daughter.
When you are in racing i think a lot of people have a bond to help each other but its not known to what extent it goes.

So none of these jocks earn stakes.

Take a look at the Jockey's parking lot and you'll see how little they earn!!!

Bobsmith - if I recall correctly - its R650 per ride and 7% of stakes
Some "top jocks" are paid retainers by the trainers to guarantee their rides for the stable
Not sure if this has since changed???

I'm sure Titch can confirm but it seems he has gone missing lately not sure why? I maybe wrong but I thought around R685 a ride and most jocks take 7/5% of stake with the top boys like Marcus and Strydom and the other top, guys getting 10% of stakes. I could well be wrong but sure Titch and Dynasty could confirm.

not below the top 40 or so, not enough 7% less tax to make a descent living.
