Charity Mile

he Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile is just around the corner and excitement is building amongst local celebrities, top South African trainers as well as the Peermont Children’s trust charities that have been selected to participate in the day’s festivities.
The annual event takes place on Saturday, 2 November and is synonymous with South Africa’s most famous faces as each runner in the feature race is associated with both a charity and a local celebrity. Although organisers are keeping mum on the selection of famous faces for the 2013 race meeting, last year’s event hosted none other than Her Serene Highness, Princess Charlene of Monaco.
Phumelela’s Sales Executive, Clyde Basel says HSH has a long association with horse racing and along with the Racing Association, also announced the HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco Starling Stakes will be featured once again on the racing itinerary and in addition, the programme will include, the HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco Maiden Mile and the HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco Maiden Sprint. The two maiden races that have been programmed are specifically for horses that have not won a race in their racing career. The princess’s generosity will enable lesser performing race horses to be acknowledged for their efforts. The nomination fee upon entry for these two races and the proceeds will be split equally between two charities, namely, the Highveld Horse Care Unit and the National Thoroughbred Trust.
The day itself offers something for the entire family with live entertainment, a celebratory autograph signing, beer garden and kid’s carnival.

SUBJECT: Supplementary entries, weights for Charity Mile
DATE: Monday 21 October 2013
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Four runners were added to the nominations for the R600,000 Peermont
Emperors Palace Charity Mile to be run over 1600m on Saturday 2 November.
Cape Town-based trainer Justin Snaith has nominated M’lords Throat and
Unencumbered while Yvette Bremner, who trains out of Port Elizabeth, has
added Blaze Of Fire and Celtic Fire to the list of entries.
Blaze Of Fire ran the race of his life when finishing a 2.50-length third
behind Jackson in the Grade 1 Champions Cup over 1800m at Greyville in
July. He has run a Turffontein before and, in fact, finished a 1.25-length
third behind Red Barrel in the Ready To Run Cup at this meeting in 2011.
trainer Geoff Woodruff has withdrawn Sabadell for the race leaving 36
entries for this Grade 2 race.
SA Derby winner Wylie Hall has been allotted top weight of 60kg for the
Charity Mile, followed by Cherry On The Top and Whiteline Fever on 59.5kg
The final field and draws will be announced at a function at Emperors
Palace tomorrow.
Woodruff has entered decent three-year-old filly Arcetri Pink into the
R3-million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup over 1400m, however, with
racing at Clairwood called off this weekend and the last four races at
Turffontein abandoned due to rain, a number if runners will be left without
that extra run to prove their ability.
Woodruff had Wild Ash down to run at Turffontein while Mike de Kock was
hoping Star Point would get a run at Turffontein and Highly regarded Nigel
Mansell would race at Clairwood.
The Grade 3 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m could be an absolute cracker if
some of the runners make the final field. Woodruff has entered The Shadow
Ofhis Smile, who had tongues wagging following his 9.25-length debut
victory over 1200m at Turffontein earlier this month.
Also among the nominations is Grade 1 SA Nursery winner Willow Magic, De
Kock’s impressive charge, Whistle Stop, and the Alec Laird-trained pair of
Chekilli and Bouclette Top.
The Grade 3 Starling Stakes over 1400m for three-year-old fillies and mares
has attracted 37 entries while the Golden Loom Handicap (Listed) over 1000m
will see some of the country’s top speedsters in action.
Supplementary entries for all features other than the Charity Mile close at
11am on Friday 25 October and final declarations close at 10am on Tuesday
29 October.
