The City Times has been inundated with complaints about the on-going noise on Tuesday, November 13, during Deepavali.

23 November 2012 | Marcia van Tonder

The Benoni SPCA's senior inspector, Annalise Jungman, said the kennels were full of stray animals due to trauma from the fireworks.

“We have 20 kennels and we took in more than 20 animals,” she said.

Several complaints were received regarding fireworks which were set alight near the Korsman Bird Sanctuary, on The Drive.

It's the unscrupulous importers that need to be sorted out...probably illegally too.

I have a dog that's treated like our own child and after seeing the fear she experienced, I'm totally against noisy fireworks.

All the luck Titch!
P.s Im of Indian decent and understand fully the celebration

I feel for both sides...as a kid I celebrated as hard as the next person...louder was better...we had dogs and it did not affect them (or maybe I saw it through tinted glasses) however, our yard was big, the neighbours were a couple of hundred metres away (or so it seemed) there was lots of open spaces...the bangs were not that big:(because that is what was allowed to be imported) there were less stupid people...(kids, so the adults ruled...and told us when to call it a day...) and we lived with our dogs, so they were with us when we set off the crackers....one of them was scared and would go and sit at my dad's feet, but the others ran around with us in the dark, sharing the excitement. The point is that we spent the better part of the day with our mutts and they were pyschologically different from my hounds today...(as were we)
Yip, things were just different...I never saw a dog that had tried to jump a precast wall....or injured itself trying to go through a fence...or shivering in an enclosed space(not of it's own choice)
yes...who am I to speak? All I know is that I am against the unregulated use thereof now. And unfortunately we cannot police serious crimes....so who expects the protection of a dog?
Ban anything that goes BANG!

There is also the wildlife that get affected. Bat colonies become disoriented and confused. Owls are terrorised. And I live near a Nature Reserve and the Rietvlei Zoo that have larger animals. Both of these places have posters asking people NOT to set off fireworks in the area. In Turffontein (aka Little Lagos), the horses are right in the middle of a suburb that goes nuts for fireworks (and I'm sure plenty of gun shots). It's not just dogs that. And in recent years, the bangs have been made exponentially and deliberately bigger, as the law has allowed for this. There is no place for these loud bangs in our society. And if our police need to be busy policing other stuff, surely a total ban makes sense?

@Everyone:

with calculated respect to all the views.....

Noise emisssion is a daily increasing occurrence; building operations, cars with big bang systems, factories, mining, trucks that roar on the highways at night, the bombs set off in the countries ravaged by war (suicide or otherwise), fracking, music at home,/office, in taxis (and state of the art speakers, whoofers and tweeters in cars that rattle the ground for metres), alarm systems that go off and exasperating on indefinitely, CLANGING OF THE STARTING GATES/STALLS, etc.......

All of that, collectively or individually, affects not only people (hearing disablities and stress), but all sorts of domestic and wildlife and even nature (vibrations that echo through the ground affecting the geo subs-strate), etc.

How much/many of that we experience daily?

Yet, no objections / petition?
