Durban has come under fire with a spate of robberies in the last week:-

On Friday night Detective Constable Krishna Harilal was shot 7 times during an armed robbery of a KFC and succumbed from his injuries. His partner also sustained multiple gunshot injuries and is currently in ICU.The community today gathered outside the site of the robbery to lay flowers on the spot and show thier outrage and support for the officers family and collegues.

At about 07:15 up to 10 suspects entered the Sunningdale centre in 3 vehicles, the suspects took up look out positions in the car park and some entered the Sunningdale SPAR, they were all armed and at least one suspect had an AK-47, the suspects entered the cash office demanding cash, they took cash from the manager and exited, meanwhile outside in the car park, the security guard on duty ran to a blue security officer who happened to be parked in the top car park and informed them that SPAR was being robbed, he then drove down to spar and the suspects in the lookout positions opened fire on him, hitting the car a number of times, as the suspects came out of the store, they also fired on him miraculously not hitting him at all although his vehicle was stuck. The suspects also assaulted a member of the public who was drawing cash from the ATM, he suffered a wound on his head from being pistol whipped. The suspects then fled in 3 - 4 vehicles down village way and into sugar farm trail.

At about 14:30 on Tuesday the 2nd of October a Durban North resident Dorothy Carlyle was Hi-jacked outside her residence in Cadogan Place Durban North.

She was taken together with her vehicle a silver BMW 1 series. Marshall Security where advised and started to assist with the search.

The victims cell phone was by that stage off but we were able to establish the last co-ordinates in the Newlands East area.

Further information revealed that 3 withdrawal’s had been made from her bank card from two ATM’s at a tavern in C Section Kwa Mashu.

The victims tracking company and ground crew where assisting with the search but it appeared the victims tracking device had been disabled.

By this stage information was being shared between Marshall Security, the Durban North SAP, the tracking company and various Neighbourhood watches who were all assisting in the search.

As the daily withdrawal limits of the cards had been reached we were expecting the suspects to wait until midnight and attempt to withdraw further amounts and we were holding observation on various ATMs in the area.

One of our Special Ops Team members then received information that the vehicle was parked by a tavern in Nyosi Road, M section Kwa Mashu. We passed this information on to the SAP and proceed together to the address. As we approached we noticed the victims vehicle parked outside a tavern with various people in the vehicle. We arrested 3 suspects in the vehicle, two female and a male. A further two suspects fled the scene.

The victim was found alive in the boot of the vehicle. She was bound by her hands and feet and was covered with a blanket. She had been assaulted and suffered two stab wounds. She was transported to Umhlanga Hospital for treatment. The vehicle and the 3 suspects were taken to SAP Durban North and detained.

We feel this an excellent example of how the sharing of information and the combined efforts of the community , the police , reservists and ourselves can make a real difference in fighting crime.

What saddens me more is tha none of these inccidents were deemed news worthy and got no coverage nor was there an uproar from the points seeking poloticians who used the striker confrontation to futher their own causes..we are living in a war zone of that there can be no doubt

I agree with GB. Unfortunately one or two security guards with metal detectors stand no chance against 10 to 15 guys armed to the teeth and with nothing to lose. Night racing at any outlet must be the scariest experience. Sadly the law does not work in South Africa, that's why these criminals will continue hitting soft targets. Not too long ago bookmaker Mike O'Connor was a victim of an armed robbery.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

Titch, both the KFC incident, and the Highjacking incident received high exposure, both on Facebook and Twitter. While those are only "social networks", these days, that's where the news is found! Thanx for sharing though!

Sunningdale Center is also just up the road from me...a mate of mine was there at the time and saw the guy get knocked about at the ATM for minding his own business and drawing money that he at least had earned, he tells me bullets were flying and it is a miracle that there was not a masacre..they have absolutely no respect for life, in fact they seem to get a rush out of putting innocent people through the trauma...
