Gavin van Zyl's effect on the betting markets

I have noticed a distinct trend recently that whenever Gavin van Zyl tips a horse of his on his podcast the horse is punted off the boards. The amount these horses shorten is ridiculous and the price is very unrealistic in light of their chances i.e. the value is exceedingly poor.

This is obviously not Mr van Zyl's fault, and he must be commended for his podcasts and views on his horses (we all wish that were more trainers like him) but bookmakers obviously listen to the podcasts too and I never see such spectacular betting swings as when a G. van Zyl horse has been tipped. It seems that punters are happy to give up their hard earned to the bookies on stupidly priced horses.

The upside is that there is a lot of value to be had on anything else that one fancies in a race with one of his horses that has been backed

the bookies are not the charity and off course they shorten athe horse if the good trainer say he have a big chance. the problem is only one or two talk so they be come the target

The betting is out long before his podcasts become available

Yesterday's horse ran 3rd

SILVER SPRING Brandon Lerena A 60.0 4 3 5.75 73.06 28/10 9/10

The time before that this same horse was backed from 6/1 into about 16/10 (I stand to be corrected on the final price) and it finished 2nd.

The percentage of winners is probably about 33% (an estimation again). What I do know is that if you took the odds you would be behind at even stakes.

I agree that its a great site and he is a top trainer. This is not criticism of Team G, just an observation that bookies are exploiting these podcasts mercilessly.

100% correct...shortening a horse before any real money is bet allows them to lay unrealistic odds and creates a domino effect for those who follow market moves blindly..

....some big hitters in the stable are getting the graft before the podcasts anyway.....:S..also when on of the Team G Sydicated horses with 20 members all R20 punters all file in the same betting shop to have a stab on their runner the bookie feels theatened that they gonna take his cash float and he wont have money for groceries......:D

The problem is not the Bookies, the horses are backed by many but he is using the wrong Jockey. It is a known fact that Brandon does not like pressure,& he has ridden some very bad races on the beaten horses(BALSE in particular). The only one he got home was in the 1st last Sunday,& even that was a sweat!

gazza..i have horses with Gavin....and u are 100% right in what u say.....i was given Regal Stride last thursday for saturday @28/10(took deductions)but i had no problems putting it down because of robbie fradd in the irons....bay princess..because of brandon....wasn't confident...i know he has won on many a van zyl horse...but in my opinion..any appie could have won on those horses...i still maintain a stronger jock and handling and bay princess would have won...and a few more that he tossed up because of his temperment
