ABSURD

13 years 6 months ago
#180001
i was just looking at the selections for tomorrow, and came across race 6 where i saw Oscars horse Hlamba, who is a 1 time winner running against a 10 time winner in a FM 68 Handicap. How on earth does a 10 time winner give a 1 time winner a 1kg advantage, and race in a 68 handicap only.If it was my horse i would scratch it,as the ''THINK TANKS'',are surelly off the mark once again.

Take it to it's extreme of absurdity Zoro ... match a horse that's just won (is it?) 20 ultra-low-class races in a row in the USA recently ... against a horse that's run 4 times and won a maiden and then a Grade 1 ... which would be handicapped the higher?

I am of the opinion that there should be a minimum that a 1 time winner 2 timer winner etc can drop to and work up from there according to the number of wins they have had. If you look around there are 1 time winners here giving weight to 4-5 time winners which I think is wrong. I know this will probably go against the merit rating fanciers but just my opinion. They can say I dont understand the merit rating system if they want but why should a 1 time winner who has won R40000 in stakes give weight to a 5 time winning older horse who has won R200000 weight?

Craig, you've just named one of the main reasons why there is so much unhappiness in racing. MERIT RATINGS.
Beside owners and trainers, what about punters? 20 yrs ago you had progress races scale a,b,c,d&e handicaps a,b,c,d&e and some of them mixed. It was so much easier to study form.Today punters walk away, owners and trainers are disgruntled, racecourses look like ghost towns, even the totes are emptier everyday, they actually close early{ ZEVENWACHT on a saturday? !!!}Lately I only go there to buy the SPORTING POST.
How f#%$#d up is that?

Is there a problem - I'm not so sure, and even if there is one how does one fix it?

The possiblle 'problem' imo are the difference in ratings given to maiden 4 yr old winners as opposed to maiden 3 yr old winners - tbe 3 yr olds rating includes WFA so is typically in the 72-77 range while the 4yr old's rating is tipically 60-65 - the problem is the 3 yr old is stuck with the 'higher' rating while he/she gets older - while WFA allowance in the races to be contested gets less and less as time goes on - not sure how to fix it.

On the other hand and Woman of the Year is an example, the older horse is not 'penalised' by losing it's WFA allowance as time goes by - still WotY certainly did not win in a manner to suggest that she is running off too low a rating - and she will in all likelyhood only get another point or 2

Would have been interesting to see where Hlamba finished had she run last night
