Leon, are you sure? I had a bet cancelled on me last week. I went nuts, called everyone from Gambling Board to Bookmakers Assoc. They busy un-cancelling as we speak. Bets a bet mate. It's like shares, if they go up you made a profit and if they go down you made a mistake. No do-overs. Or what rights are you looking for?

What about rights as in the consumer protection act ? Or can these sights carry on cutting limits if you win ?

My bookie cancels a bet if I made a mistake, provided that I cancel within 15 minutes of taking the bet. I didn't have a problem at either Marshals or Bettingworld.
Currently, bookies are more accommodating to customer needs.

So what happens if somebody take 25k/10k a horse then the bookie drifts the remaining runners and takes monies at the new prices, then 15 minutes later the punter that original bet phones upto cancel?

Hibs, i think that's the bookies' biggest issue. i can't see it affecting the price if it's a small bet

I placed a matchbet for later in the day.
I happen to check pending bets before the race to finded the bet "Voided".
I called them to ask WTF, they said error and they voided.
I said no obvious error I could see, and told them to re-instate or else. They said "no".
So I called Gambling Board, but was public holiday no answer. So I emailed.
So far they deposited R500 "gift" to say sorry and offered to pay on "correct" odds but haven't seen it yet.
Limit been cut to win R1000
And that's the sad story so far. Naming and shaming on the cards if they don't put right.

Peekay i change bets and void cancel all the time, but i wouldnt if it was effecting my book, for example i couldnt change an error in a multiple if the first leg had kicked of.Or if i had hedged a section of the original bet.Or i had taken bets on other runners due to the original bet.

Bookies that offer a good service will get my money. Bookies do not want to loss punters therefore they will try to do whatever they can do to keep the punter happy. Irrespective of the horse I punted shorten or drifted they will cancel if I made a genuine mistake, now that's what I call service. Punters are no longer loyal to one bookie.

I can understand a mistake when filling in exotics, with permutations of bets, but how do you back the wrong horse,by mistake?
If a bookmaker lays a reasonable bet,he may well have taken other measures to balance his field sheet, and I can understand why he cannot reverse one transaction within that.
Jack's case is different and a remnant of the days when gambling debts were not legally enforcable, and bookmakers could unilaterally decide whether a bet is a bet! I think that it will be interesting, when the inevitable happens one day,and a bookmaker, voiding a bet that was "contractual" , will be tested in court under the principle of offer and acceptance.I think a bookmaker who offers the wrong price by mistake will be found to be bound by the consequences,as in any other form of business
(BTW,I am pretty sure that more restrictive limits to selected punters is a breach of the Consumer Protection Act......I wonder who will test that first?)

One of our clan members has engaged the Gambling Board re the CP Act. Hopefully he will let us know how it's going soon. I think I'll forward the thread to remind him.
