A couple of comments about umlilo's posting:
"the bullet lodged in the police radio was a "jacketed round". This is a police-issue bullet and is "consistent with having been fired from a [police] Heckler and Koch MP5" : All ammunition sold via normal channels is jacketed. Unjacketed ammo (bare lead) causes horrific tearing wounds because it spreads on impact ... in the Boer War some a##%holes used to file off the steel at the tips of ammo rounds. These were called dum-dum bullets and if you were captured with them on you you would be shot immediately, no POW status. Homemade rounds I can't comment on.
"The non-police firearm found at the scene was a converted BBM Bruni self-loading pistol". : Converted in what way? If he did the conversion himself then he was no amateur looking to protect himself from night thuggery. Likewise if he loaded his own ammo.
"The gun was found to have a "bulleted cartridge" in the magazine'. : This doesn't make sense ... did they mean the pistol was cocked and therefore about to fire? That would be consistent with it being a "self-loading pistol" ... i.e. a semi-automatic. One doesn't carry a pistol cocked ... VERY dangerous and anyway very awkward. One only cocks it when about to fire. If that was the case then the cops were 100% justified in assuming the guy was about to shoot at them. If the writer doesn't mean that the gun was cocked then I'm blowered if I know what he could mean. Perhaps just that the gun was loaded with a single round, so what?
I don't know how the UK cops are trained, but I was taught that if you must shoot to survive in a dangerous situation, shoot at least twice. Not once. Aim for slightly different areas of the main body ... and never mind fancy head shots. Just blaze away. So if I hear the cop fired off two shots I would think that was just common sense, assuming he was justified in firing at all.
I get the feeling that the writer is not very familiar with guns or ammunition ... maybe just cut-and-pasting from someone else ... someone equally unfamiliar with, etc., etc. and so on down the line, everyone cribbing from everyone else and hoping the first guy knew what he was talking about.

@Umlilo - What does this whole episode say about South Africans - Are we more civilised or more desensitised to the issue? Police shoot civilians (mostly criminals) in SA on a regular basis and in turn, police are shot on a regular basis. Do we loot riot and destroy private property as a result? Tatane was murdered on camera! Did rioting and looting spread across SA?
I sense opportunism in this whole thing. Criminals taking advantage of the situation. 21-12-2012 may not be end of the world in the pure sense (asteroid, nuclear war etc), it is probably the date for the end of the world as we now know it!
Oh yes remember France six years ago. www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,15306643,00.html

'What does this whole episode say about South Africans'
All the more reason we should be standing together by building bridges (not Malema style!)
Proud to be one!

Johannesburg - A Bangladeshi shop owner was robbed and set on fire in Dennilton, Polokwane, on Wednesday, police said.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the 35-year-old man was robbed of his money, groceries and cellphone and was then doused with paraffin and set alight.
The man was sleeping in his shop when three people came in through the roof. He sustained serious burn injuries and was taken to hospital.
No arrests have been made. In a separate incident, a Zimbabwean couple was robbed and the woman raped at their house in Musina, Limpopo, on Wednesday, police said.
Ramatseba said two armed men and another with an axe entered the couple's room at 02:00.
They chopped off the man's right hand and two of the men raped the woman.
They took the couple's passports and money, Ramatseba said.

SA govt. issues travel warning for UK
Eyewitness News
South Africans planning to travel to London should postpone their trips because of the violent riots that have gripped parts of London, the Department of International Relations said on Wednesday.
The department said it would continue to monitor the situation and the developments in UK.
The riots have been described as the worst in decades and have entered their fifth day.
About 700 people are reported to have been arrested and dozens of officers have been injured during clashes.
The department’s Sol Molobe said, “There are disturbances taking place in that country and everybody who has planned to travel to the UK has to take that into consideration."

@ Greg - Reciprocal and reactive in terms of our history with the UK!. I think you missed my point on "civilised". The UK (the bastion of righteousness) preaches to us lowly South Africans, yet, their house is burning.
On that, Umlilo only part quoted what I wrote, the point I was trying to make there is that we are desensitised as a society, as South Africans.
The bigger picture is the world is in trouble. Those on the fringes of the worlds society are the ones most impacted by the sentiments that drive our stock markets. Can you believe that we leave food in the hands of traders on the commodities market? Absolutely sick. Bad sentiment or stupid comments can drive food price out of the reach of the starving.
I always measure human sentiment against the life of a tree. A stock market can crash but a tree does not give a fuck. For the most part, it is here before us and is there after us.
