J J The Jet Plane flies home in Mercury Sprint
Report: South Africa, Sunday
Clairwood: Mercury Sprint (Grade 1) 6f, turf, 3yo+
J J The Jet Plane (Lucky Houdalakis/Pierre Strydom) put his bruised foot problems behind him to destroy the opposition in the Mercury Sprint at Clairwood on Sunday.
Despite wearing steel shoeson his hind feet, the 2008 winner was able to shoot straight to the front.
From two furlongs out he steadily increased his advantage to romp home five and a half lengths clear, justifying 9-10 favouritism without being asked a seriousquestion.
Gaultier (33-1) was second, half a length in front of Bush Pirate (14-1).
Geoff Woodruff's pair Private Jet and Earl Of Surrey never showed with a chance but in truth nothing got a look in.
Strydom said: "My only worry was the hiccup he had in his work and the concern was whether he was fit enough. I thought he would either win by five lengths or finish stone last.
"With his lack of fitness, and the tail wind, I always knew I could be concerned in the last furlong and a half but he has so much natural speed that he is a class above the rest.
"I now have to rate him the best sprinter I have ever ridden. Before now I thought it was Goldmark who absolutely floated, but this horse has both speed and acceleration."
Houdalakis added: "I can't tell you what went through my mind that Wednesday morning when he was lame but he is a horse who doesn't take a lot of work. All credit to the people at home who worked vigorously and we came through it."
It is thought most unlikely that the five-year-old will be asked to race in Dubai and Britain again.
Part-owner Henry Du Preez said: "We haven't decided on plans - that will be up to Lucky - but we have been thinking of going to Cape Town in January for the Cape Flying Championship."

Great win by JJ, awesome. Thanks for video Hib, track looked a bit 'sandy' and kicking up quite a bit?
Trying to download the Miss D race, not working yet, but sounded like nice improvement! Dave, my dad was at the track and met up with Laff before and after race, hopefully next run we'll get a few more of the lads down if they're free. cheers Alan.
