J J The Jet Plane must overcome hiccup
Preview: South Africa, Sunday 3.25pm BST
Clairwood: Mercury Sprint (Grade 1) 6f, turf, 3yo+
STAR sprinter J J The Jet Plane (Lucky Houdalakis/Piere Strydom) goes into the Mercury Sprint at Clairwood in Durban on Sunday after an unwelcome, and potentially significant, hold-up in his preparation.
Houdalakis explained: "We had a little bit of a hiccup with him in that he bruised a foot and missed ten days work.
"I would have preferred an extra week but I think we can get away with it. When it happened he was pretty much a fit horseand he was just ticking over."
J J The Jet Plane won this by four lengths two years ago on his final start before joining Mike de Kock for a Dubai and British campaign.
He was a comfortable winner ofthe Golden Horse Casino Sprint last time on his first outing since rejoining Houdalakis.
However, he has drifted in the ante-post market - from 7-10 to evens - and is expected to face tough opposition from Private Jet (Geoff Woodruff/Felix Coetzee) and stable companion Earl Of Surrey (Johnny Geroudis).
Both were Grade 1 sprint winners last season but have had plenty of veterinary attention since.
Private Jet had two wind operations but won at the Vaal three weeks ago. Woodruff said: "He was a bit in need of his last run and will definitely strip fitter from it.
"Earl Of Surrey fractured his pelvis immediately after winning last year's Golden Horse Casino but has been back in work a long time.
"He and Private Jet did a gallop over five furlongs on the Vaal sand and finished only short heads apartso I'm pretty comfortable with him."
Although three-year-olds have won five of the last eight runnings, there are only two of them this time, and both Clearly Silver and Galanthus are longshots.
