PRESS RELEASE
RACING
Merit Rating Appeal
An Appeal was lodged by Glen Kotzen Racing Stables on behalf of the horse BIG CITY LIFE against the 118 Merit Rating allocated after winning the Rising Sun Gold Challenge WFA (Grade 1), a R750 000 race over 1600m at the Clairwood Racecourse on 12 June 2010.
An independent panel consisting of Messrs P Davis, G Hawkins and R Napier was convened to hear this Appeal on 30 June 2010 via a teleconference. The Appeal Panel agreed with the Handicappers that this was a very difficult race to rate and that there were a number of factors to consider in determining the correct line horse.
However, the Panel was of the opinion that the line horse SMART BANKER, used by the Handicappers, was not the appropriate one, as his performances in KwaZulu-Natal and especially over a left hand bend was not as high as his performances on the Highveld. They believed that a more suitable key horse to use to measure the value of this race was the horse BLUE TIGER. Taking into account the conditions on the day and the manner in which the race was run, the Panel agreed with the Handicapping Panel that BLUE TIGER ran his best race to date, but did not necessarily believe that the level achieved by BLUE TIGER, a race merit rating (RMR) of 119 to be correct. Rather they believed taking into account BLUE TIGER’s best performances of a 113 RMR on three separate occasions, that he ran at least a length superior to those performances, thus making him run to a RMR of 115. Given the above, the Panel was of the view that BIG CITY LIFE who beat BLUE TIGER by 0.25 of a length (one MR point) to be a 116 and adjusted his rating accordingly. BLUE TIGER’s new rating is 115.
The deposit will be refunded.
