You cannot name a horse "RAT"

Lafferty and his clan might think it is funny that they name horses after the various breeds found on a farm. They have the right to do so, but for me a racehorse is such a majestic animal that it deserves to be given a bit more respect. Is a turkey not a turkey, is a goat not a goat then why the hell call a horse Rat or Donkey.
Names like Pocket Power and Flaming Rock or Illustrador, they mean something to me. Why call such a beautiful animal "RAT" ?

I have also seen "Cabbage", "Mop", and "Scratch"... it can occassionally be a clever play on words involving the sire and dam's names... but honestly, I think the joke is now stale. I agree with Harris - I think a racehorse, which for me is the epitome of grace and elegance, deserves better than "Rat"...

I'm not good at naming horses, but so much hope and effort goes into breeding and looking after a horse, that I feel desperately sorry for those people who have horses renamed with names like Kokorot Sop.
Rat Burana is a place and Rat Pack probably comes from the movie. Bunratty is a castle etc etc., but Cockroach Soup or Rat?
While is doesn't bring racing into disrepute, it's hardly reputable and neither does it have any redeemable features. Pity.
I'm good for a laugh, but some jokes fall flat.
Pathetic.

The only reason humans name objects or animals is so that they feel that they control that object or animal. Horses are given fancy names to stroke breeders egos imo. I have yet to see a race horse respond to its name. Their names are so easily changed anyway. (Front of House to Front House).
Naming a horse Moon Over a Silvery Lake or Rat makes no difference to a horse. It serves only to make the individuals who name or own them feel important in the public eye.
Carry on Mr Laff. You and your owners should continue to have fun. It's high time that someone shows that this game is not only for the eloquently pompous few but for the masses who enjoy the fun side of racing.

LOL
Well put.
As it could only be done by someone who spells "eliquently" and "pompus" incorrectly in the same sentence.

Thanks for the spell check Jack - fixed
One day I will be a perfect like you. Why don't you continue the debate rather than look for fault in the response. Easier to criticise. Playing the man not the ball to detract from the point and feel important?
At least I know my place - I'm neither eloquent nor pompous.
