Desperate times call for Tamarillo measures by Leon Setaro
Racing is at Greyville this afternoon and it's an exceptionally
competitive card on offer, made worse by the fact that we've been robbed
of two pick 6 carryovers from the last 3 KZN meetings (but more on that
later). A glance through today's betting indicates just how open the
races are, particularly the P/A races (3 to
where the favourites of
the first four legs are priced up around 5/1 and better on Interbet.
This trend continues throughout the card leaving the one and only short
priced favourite to open the meeting in the form of an unraced two year
old, and deep in the red at 5/10! - risky!
So, without a standout bankable money-maker to be found it may be worth
taking aim at the P/A just to keep the interest bubbling through the
day. If however it is a straight win bet you insist on, then trainer
Craig Eudey could be the one to toss forth the lifeline in the 2nd race.
Here he sends out the first of his 3 contenders, No.12 Tamarillo (5/2F)
owned and bred by Bridget Oppenheimer.
Business potential in the 2nd race - Tamarillo at 5/2F
Craig rates Tamarillo as his best on the day and believes the 5/2 to be
excellent value. The top 3 in the betting (Tamarillo 5/2, Hugo the Boss
7/2, Liberty Eagle 9/2), all ran together last time out with a half
length separating them when they filled the minor placings behind race
winner Rockvale. Christopher Taylor rode Rockvale to victory on that
occasion and he echoes Craig's sentiments that Tamarillo is a good thing
this time. Watch the replay Here to see how
Tamarillo runs on from behind to get up for 3rd, this despite being
hampered at the 200m mark and losing momentum at a crucial stage. He's
reportedly improved since that run and jumping from a much better
barrier position this time around he's clearly the one to beat.
Irish Darling (Friday morning)
Craig Eudey's other two on the day are Irish Darling in race 5
(pictured) and Touch of Spring in race 6. Both are well positioned to
get into the hunt in their respective races, offering Craig a chance of
a stable multiple on the day should Tamarillo set the scene alight early
on.
Standing in his way though is trainer Gavin Van Zyl who looks set to
hotly contest the outcome of both these races with his fillies
Sunningdale and Lady Bling.
Sunningdale works around the Summerveld turn on Friday morning
Race 5 No.4 Sunningdale (33/10 Interbet) has been campaigning over
shorter but did try the 2500m trip once before where she failed to find
a place. Because of this, trainer Gavin Van Zyl believes there may be
doubts about whether she gets 2400m so he's put her in here to see how
she copes a year on from her last marathon attempt. Personally I believe
the extra is what she's looking for and with her solid recent form she's
a big runner in this competitive lineup. Felix Coetzee takes the ride.
Lady Bling is a talented sort and she looked in tip-top shape
on Friday at Summerveld. She runs in the 6th race and at the value odds
of 5/1 on Interbet is worth a hit.
Pick 6 carryovers - and away they go!
For the last two consecutive Wednesday meetings in KZN the results have
been impossible to catch and have generated 2x major Pick 6 carryovers
but as per the new rules, the powers-that-be have lifted the sweet
pickings out from our happy hunting ground and shifted them elsewhere to
Gauteng. Now there seems to be a distinct unhappiness resonating through
the punting ranks about this migration of carryover pools, especially
when they are dumped onto run-of-the-mill bores, far from the source of
origin as we've seen twice now over the last 10 days. This is typical of
the racing operators to disregard punters' viewpoints and as usual we
are not consulted on issues that impact specifically and (in this case
exclusively) on us.
Whilst the logic behind this 'discretion to move carryover pools'
appears sound, it needs to be implemented correctly. KZN is the punting
capital of South Africa, don't take our carryover pools away unless
they're going onto a leading feature meeting, preferably at month end
and where all preceeding carryovers are merged into a single
mega-pool. A perfect example of this potential mega-pool scenario is
next weekend's Classic Day meeting at Turffontein 27th March. It's a
highlight of the Highveld Autumn season with 7 feature races carded (3
grade 1s and 4 grade 3s) - now that's mega-material! So why then hasn't
our 2x KZN Pick 6 carryover pools been amassed onto Classic Day instead
of being unjustifiably relocated and diluted across featureless soup
kitchen racing on the Highveld? And why hasn't a press release been
issued informing us about the wisdom behind these decisions when clearly
there is discontent amongst punters in this regard?
