De La Reys Grey ???
15 years 4 months ago
It is frightening to me that a horse is allowed to race 2 days in a row.The level of intelligence in this game sucks and i am sure as hell happy that the trainer of DE LA REYS GREY is not my trainer.
There has been so little racing of late that surely another horse could have had a chance to race on Sunday considering DE LA REYS GREY ran stone last.
Its so pathetic that everyone tries to equate horse racing with kings.
Been in the game for a mere 7 years and still cant find anything kingly about racing in South Africa.
I love Racing but I love Horses more

i used to think this way but my eyes have been opened) but when you consider that Olympic athletes (and as I recall from my school days we often had to race three times in a day over various distances and relays) have to compete in heats two days running sometimes on the same day and as I've said before in nature the Zebra can't tell the lion "you chased me yesterday so today I'll have a break thanks" As long as the horse is sound and NOT being held together by painkillers then let it run(stipes job and vet to check if horse is unsound). Racing is physical - have not heard complaints from men saying my wife wants sex three days in a row. New phase in racing maybe fitter horses less breakdowns(if the tracks are in order) less vet bills - better form. Obviously the trainer needs to be careful of over racing (over work) but that's why you pay him. Look up the horse Aeroplane and Autumn Blaze(I think that's his name) - everytime I turn on teletrack they seem to be racing in the UK.

Traditionally SA trainers run a horse and have a break of between 4 to 6 weeks, very frustrating for owners as then the horse gets a bad draw
Buddy Maroun was an exception and we have found the same with Mitch, if the horse is fit and well he runs it rather than keeping in the stable.
Not sure if this is bad for a horse? not qualified to say, but from an owner its magic
In addition horses go over the jumps for a couple of miles sometimes twice on same day, plus others one or twice a week.
In Australia some horses run 2 days before the Melbourne Cup
I am sure all horses are different, but sometimes I wish our trainers would change the fixed mindset on how their fathers told them to train horses and give it a bash, you will find you have happier owners?
imvho

I have never had a horse run more often than El Kapitaine and never had a horse with less vet bills!
Maybe there is something to be said for "toughening them up"....Nobody,in general terms, ran their horses more often than Buddy Maroun and yet his horses had longer earning careers than most...horses still at the top at age 7,with sometimes around 100 runs.
Perhaps a proper study on the subject would be worthwhile?

Nothing wrong ,im sure the trainer nows what his doing, maybe the saddle slipped and the horse trailed in without a sweat and trainer regarded it as a non run, sadly we will never know, but im okay with trainers changing theire mind sets and giving us owners more races inbetween 4/6 week breaks as they are supposed to be athletes after all.

Well if it is good to race a horse 2 days in a row then why was this horse unable to even run a place never mind a win.
In reply to Mr Hawaii Thoroughbred's are not ZEBRAS they Horses. Do u know the difference ?
My personal opinion is 3 to 4 races a month here in South Africa taking into consideration that our training tracks are rather lacking i would not race my horses more than 3 times a month and then i would insure that it had a break in between, it is easy to compare to the British but def not realistic as their tracks are far superior to ours.

All about placement i feel...my colt won twice in a week and on a telling track but my trainer waited till the very end before going ahead...as my trainer says...horses actually only get fit when they run a race and not morning workouts...
In UK racing, when i put the put my TV on that horse Mocha Java runs - easily 5 times a month. Some horses take runs better than others and i feel if a horse is sound let him run...he was born to run...i actually think it's the travelling between venues that makes horses ill perform and not whether they run today or tomorrow. Personally i think De La Rey's Grey is maybe not a superstar but a horse like those of Buddy was good sorts and had the class to win every day and sound...just my opinion...
