There were some amazingly high payouts too!
The reasons, that P is either unaware of,or chooses not to share,is almost immaterial now,as any punter who has bets in an enviroment that will probably pay half the SP and R1 a place,on the off-chance of the odd "R2.50" a place,is rare, and the tote has become an unnacceptable betting medium.
The question you have to ask yourself is,how much are we being robbed on our exotic bets, but have nothing to measure against,so we are oblivious?

The only sensible and fair thing to do - these wayward payouts are causing great harm to the operator's integrity and if I was a shareholder I would tell them so. Joe public already feels that there is 'insider' trade as regards Jockeys owners and bookies. The tote has in the past been seen as a safehaven/bastion of honesty but with payouts that boggle the mind the only winner is the lotto and slot machines. Already many punters that I personally have dealings with have stopped UK pa's because the tickets going foward have been removed from view. What's the point of giving people what they don't want - I personally seldom back with bookmakers as I found that their odds could often be restrictive - with this new development I've started to look at their odds in a different light - "I can take 4-1 or take a chance on the tote and get either 7-1 or 2-1 depending on what Lucky-Numbers-Lai backs" The approach is careless and prescriptive and is harming the industry.

Pirates,I don't honestly know, but I believe that"P"have investigated and know what the anomolies are(although they might not understand them) but have chosen not to share them and that is ominious.
I believe that a proper complaint(with evidence) needs to be lodged with the gambling board, for a full investigation.
I,for one,do not trust any communique from"P"

the perception out there is that there is skullduggery in most forms of racing and this scenario with tote payouts adds major fuel to the fire..i have just returned from a holiday to gauteng and the cape and visited many betting outlets and everyone is talking negatively about it and it is causing permanent damage to the industry.

Yes, that's route- the Gambling Board.
I hereby propose that you draw up a complaint to the GGB and even KZN, E & W Cape & FS.
Spell out to them the gravity of the situation; that, eventually, horseracing gambling spend will dwindle, and poof goes the tax generated on gambling!
Ask them to make the operators accountable to the betting public (owners, trainers, punters, etc).
You have my full backing on this.
Will other posters come forward and endorse Rob as our delegate?

Umlilo let's give them a chance to rectify first before going to the board. I say that let's do something positive - I was told that you can complain via the helpline and get a reference no - if you have a problem send an email to Phumelela or call the helpline. With the spotlight on the industry at present I'm sure that something will be done as the burden of knowing that your customers have complained and you did nothing to sort out the problem might just not sit well with certain people as that will be a permenant mark on the CV(with all the global restruturing who knows how long it might be before the CV needs to be presented to a new employer
customercare@phumelela.com
Telephone 0861 444 822 (be sure to get a reference and ask who will be returning your call and when and who the "helpline" person is.)

Mr H;
I hear and note your view.
However, isn't 10-odd years a tardy too long to have given them?
I have complained (requested rather) that TellyTrack be included on M-Net's Easyview bouquet (even on this site); for one, Margaret is still getting answers!
We have the Groom's Funds, sale/disposal of assets, shares allocated to BEE, etc. (check out Brett Maselle's exposes where the messenger was shot!), etc.
It's time for decisions and action! Either pardon Shaikh & De Kok or charge all the others also....now!

I understand Umlilo - you have proved my point exactly - Government always wants you to follow "Channels" - You should first complain to the lower order (as you have to Phumelela and now have proof of that) before you go to Government to prove that nothing is being done and that the board is your last resort(unless the complaint is in your view so major that the board should step in - in this case I really am 50/50 as I think this situation is very damaging to racing both as an owner(bookmakers now getting extra revenue) and punter)
