are there any REAL BOOKMAKERS out there ?
15 years 5 months ago
I have always been under the impression that for a fixed place bet, one would normally get 1/4 of the win odds. That is certainly not the case these days.
Thursday at big T, QUI DUEL, 8 runners in the field.... fav. happens to be odds on.
Qui Duel on Hollywood shows 40 / 1 FIXED PLACE bet 2/1 - I said pass. I placed an OPEN PLACE bet - this is the official tote payout - right ?
I go to the rooms, Bettingworld also has Qui 40/1 but best place bet about 5/1
at the off Qui Duel now 66/1. I have a place bet on the tote..... shows R7.00 odd a few mins. before they jump.
Result Qui runs 3rd.... OFFICIAL PLACE PAYOUT - REDUCED to R 3,60 sh!t.
surely at 40/1 I should have been able to get from a bookmaker 8 or 10/1 the place, & to add insult to injury it drifts to 66/1
66/1 for a win ( bookies ) R 3,60 tote place...... something not right.
that's why I ask - ARE THERE ANY REAL BOOKMAKERS OUT THERE ?

Morning Elvis, many variations when taking a fixed place bet.
When I was at the other side of the counter, we gave 1/4 the odds for races with 16 runners first 3 places only and no money on shots
If you have a money on shot in a race it destorts the price of the second fav for a place at say 1/4 the odds
or if you have a 1/5 shot in the race and a 10/1 second fav 5/2 for the second fav to run a place would be dangerous.
However look forward to some inputs from the bookies

Place Betting
1. Fixed Odds Places
The following shall apply to place betting at fixed odds:
1. Hollywood fixed odds place betting is based on carded runners as per the table below. E.g. Should a field be reduced from 14 to 13, the 4th will apply subject to deduction rules. The same applies from 7 to 6 runners where the 3rd place will still be paid. (However should a field ever be reduced to only 3 runners all place bets will be null and void and the stake refunded.)
2. In any races of 3 carded runners or less no place bets shall be placed. All bets placed will be refunded.
3. All fixed odds place bets are subject to the rules relating to scratchings and deductions.
4. In the event where scratchings result in 3 actual runners or less, all place bets will be refunded.
5. In the event of a dead heat in the placings, normal dead heat rules will apply.
6. In the event that scratchings reduce the size of the field, and deductions are declared, bets will stand as taken subject to those deductions. If no deduction is declared the odds and places will be determined as per the table below.
7. Hollywood may at anytime withdraw the offer of fixed odds place betting in any given race or event.
8. Hollywood reserves the right to adjust the prices offered for a fixed odds place bet.

b. Where there are 8 to 15 runners, 3 places will apply.
c. Where there are 16 or more runners, 4 places will apply.
3. Open Places (International Meetings)

Like you system for place betting,in the UK you would have been hard pressed to find a bookie that would lay you a Place only bet.
I use the same system as Great odds do,over in the UK..
1/5 the odds all non handicaps,1/4 the odds handicaps 5-7 runners 2 places paid,1/5 the odds handicaps 8-11 runners 3 places paid,1/4 the odds handicaps 12- 15 runners 3 places paid,1/4 the odds 16+ runners 4 places paid..
We won`t lay a place only bet!!
