LEADING jockey Richard Fourie will not be accompanying trainer Basil Marcus to Singapore as his stable jockey, as originally planned. Fourie has informed the Singapore Turf Club that he will not be taking up the six-month visiting jockey’s licence granted to him from 1 January 2010.

Fourie (24), was awarded National Colours and represented South Africa in the International Jockeys’ Challenge in November. He will be riding freelance for now and his decision to stay will be welcomed by his many supporters.

Fourie’s long-time manager and agent Gavin Hunter told Racingweb: “Richard believes that he is not fully ready to join the highly competitive international circuit. He has much time on his side and has more goals to achieve in South Africa. His feelings should be respected.

”The rumours about a fallout between Richard and Basil Marcus or about Richard being fired are not true. Things between him and Basil Marcus are entirely amicable. When Basil leaves he will have a diminished string in South Africa, but Richard will still take rides from the stable as a freelancer.”
