Lahaleeb strikes for Channon in Canada

Report: Canada, Saturday

Woodbine: EP Taylor Stakes (Grade 1) 1m2f, turf, 3yo+ f/m

WILLIAM BUICK landed the biggest success of his burgeoning career in Canada on Saturday when Lahaleeb was the shock winner of the Grade 1 EP Taylor Stakes, where she led home a British one-two from Rainbow View.

Last year's joint-champion apprentice was winning his first Group or Grade 1 on the Mick Channon-trained three-year-old, sent off a 44-1 shot on the pari-mutuel, which made her the longest shot on the board in the eight-runner contest.

But she belied those odds with a comfortable length-and-three-quarter victory in the Can$1 million (£589,000) event, which has now gone to European visitors 15 times in the last 21 runnings.

Although Lahaleeb finished close second to Again in the Irish Guineas, the daughter of Redback was scoring for the first time since winning the Fred Darling in April.

However, she scoredconvincingly after being produced from the rear by Buick, who had settled her well off an easy pace set by local hope Roses 'N' Wine and Treat Gently, both of whom faded in the closing stages.

Buick angled his mount out from behind 9-4 favourite Rainbow View, who had travelled kindly in third, to hit the front a furlong from home and score in decisive fashion.

US-trained Princess Haya took third in front of Mark Johnston's Eastern Aria, but last year's Oaks winner Look Here beat only one home in a race where British horses made up half the field.

Winning time for the 1m2f contest on ground officially described as ‘firm' was 2m02.89m.

"This is my first Group 1 so it's very special," said Buick. "She had to step up over what she'd done and she's had a long year back home but I rode her here two days ago, and she was in top form."

Assistant trainer Michael Channon jnr was on hand in Toronto representing his father Mick, who trains Laheleeb for owners Mohammed Al-Qatami and Khalid Al-Mudaf.

"She's like a split personality," he told TV reporters. "So easy to train but full of guts and aggression when she gets on the track."

Lahaleeb was steeping up in trip to 1m2f for the first time in the EP Taylor. "She's by Redback who was a miler but she hadn't been stopping at the end of her races so it was worth a go," added Channon.

"We have been sitting on her a bit at home because we haven't had the ground for her in Britain. It's good ground and before I would have liked a little more cut here but now I'm not so bothered."

Lahaleeb could possibly be supplemented to the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita next month, though likely fast ground tempers enthusiasm.

"The Breeders' Cup would be a lovely thing, but we do think she needs a little bit of a cut in the ground, which is why we came here really," said Channon.

"So, we are not to sure really, It's a question of one race at a time. The boss, my old man, will have the final say.

A great day for Channon after Music Show won the Gr 2 Rockfel at Newmarket, also at long odds.

Princess Haya of Jordan is his wife. She owned Raven's Pass and New Approch and so won the Derby - which her hubby never has.

Queally told Channel 4 Racing:

"This horse deserves it, he's had so many near-misses.
"Thankfully the race went well, I got a nice run through. We got his confidence right back up in the last couple of runs and it paid off today.

"Henry could see it in his work on a morning and he was bullish coming into the race. I knew he was a big price and an outsider but Henry could see something nobody else could."

"I was worried about the ground today because the softer the better for him.

"It's great for Prince Khalid Abdullah because he has been a great supporter of mine and I want to thank him so much, and Jane my wife, if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be here today.

"We all need a confidence boost now and again. It doesn't matter how good they are, they have to enjoy themselves and want to do it."

I was only joking Hibby, but thanks very much, I enjoyed the moving numbers at the bottom. The horse was under a hard ride a long way out, thought my Rainbow View looked the part, sure she will win one soon?
