Now you talk as a punter . I will listen to you when you become a owner.

I have no problem with punters punting my horses . If they study form and feel as if my horses have a chance go for it . The problem comes in when the price gets taken .

I don't punt favorites even my own horses . I like to enjoy my horses at good prices which is so rare these days.

whoever believes that buying horses is an investment NEEDS TO VISIT A SHRINK VERY QUICKLY.investments are property shares businesses etc but not bloodstock..yes you can be lucky and crack a champion but the odds of that must be many thousand to 1..as an owner you need to write the money off you spend on buying horses and paying their keep and whatever you get back is a bonus..when your horse runs it is in the public domain and anybody has the right to back it..if you cannot accept these points i have written you will become sour to the game and eventually leave it ..

bubby your comparison is completely disjointed! get real! racing is an entertainment business. Punters are the customer...their monetary input makes the turnover, any sound businessman will agree that a good value product must be provided, not one that is full of holes and opportunist traders by stakeholders themselves?!
how long do you think your shop business will stay open if you sell bread that you've bitten into and expect your customers to pay full price for it or even come back??

Not so many years ago..
I got called a WANK.. on national TV...for taking a bite out of the bread...

but then again...I ate half the bread...what did I expect...

but could not resist the temptation..
took a double..the day before onto the first timer...

never saw the horse work..
did not even know who the owner was..
did not even check for the trainer...

all I knew..the double had to be taken..

Pirates I agree with you . BUT any investment in business requires a return .
If you have that mindset that you buy horses just to watch them run unplaced each week then you either have a terrible financial advisor or a really weird fetish .

Imagine buying 10 Australian Imports at 500k each and watching them run for South African stakes. I mean come on , every owner wants to make some money when they run.

My winnings go straight into my Kids education so I don't punt seriously at all unlike my wife who believes she needs to see a return on our investments , either stakes or a good punt .

I buy my horses , I feed my horses , I take care of them when they sick , I deal with the emotional trauma of losing them . Why should I the owner not get my price !!

Lex, the sum is a simple one -because at the end of the day you are discouraging the punter if you inside trade....stakes will be bigger if more punters participate. Provide a good value product with no 'privileged information' and it will work back to you the owner (i am an owner too).

having horses is a luxury item,do you really think that brilliant business men like marcus jooste chris van niekerk think they are going to make money out the game...i have heard mr beck say that his other businesses pay for his horseracing..the real tragedy is that their are trainers out their who actually tell clients that it is an investment and we all know where these owners go...out the game..lex i am an owner and a punter and if i like a horse in a race whether raced or unraced i will have a bet and the same goes for punters if they fancy a horse i own..if you want to get on first then tell your bookie to claim it for you as betting opens

Funny part of all is I'm not even an owner but a punter. Well spotted lex. Even I know that if you own a horse you have the right to hear it from the trainer and not the trainer first to the public. I fully agree after the trainer told you its got a chabce you need to get on. If you to late the public is entitle to take the odds.

when you allow the groom to drive your R1,000,000 merc...
the balance will be restored..

The groom can ride your R1,000,000 racehorse...no questions..
but not the merc..

so why are we concerned about ROI...

your portfolio...
you want the brokers CV..before you invest R1,000,000..
the broker got a PHD..applied maths and business economics..
he has to furnish guarantees...
attorneys are involved...

but your R1,000,000 horse..
the trainer (ex jock)..maybe std8...
guarantees..what is that...

so why are we concerned about ROI...
