BLOODSTOCK SA PRESS RELEASE: Full sister to Big City life

A full-sister to Big City Life is one of many plums at Emperors Palace National Two-Year-Old Sale 2009

BLOODSTOCK SA PRESS RELEASE

SOUTH Africa’s major vendors and all the top sires will be represented at the Emperors Palace National Two-Year-Old Sale, a three-day event at the TBA’s Sales Complex at Gosforth Park, scheduled for 14,15 and 16 August.
The nature of the sale lends itself to good value buys. It comes at a time of year when breeders are keen to sell their stock that didn’t make it to the National Sale in April.
In addition, as bloodstock expert Karel Miedema points out, the development of a foal from a yearling to a two-year-old is sometimes quite surprising, presenting quality buying opportunities that simply weren’t there in April.
Backward early in the year, several yearlings grow into magnificent specimens which are arguably easier to assess in August. And many of them will come at better prices than they would at the country’s most prestigious sale.
Racing scribe David Mollett and many others agree that Lot 103, Cash Register, will be one of the plums at the Sale. Mollett asserts: ``Friday evening is the perfect starting point in my book and there should be some real action when Big City Life's sister comes under the hammer of auctioneer Mike Killassy. The fifth produce of Goldmark mare Dollar Crisis, the filly is appropriately named, given Big City Life's top performances throughout the KwaZulu-Natal season”, including winning the Vodacom Durban July. Cash Register has already arrived safely at the TBA Sales Venue.
The draft also features 15 yearlings by recently deceased stallion Victory Moon, in good demand even before his tragic demise last week. Also on offer will be progeny from first-season stallions Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), Stage Call (Sadler’s Wells) and Way West (Danehill).

Other highlights include:

Day One:
Lot 5: Zion, a Western Winter colt from Maine Chance with black type in the pedigree.
Lot 10: Katsimoto, a filly by Computaform Sprint winner Cataloochee.
Lot 17: Casey’s Desire, a half-brother to top class Lizard’s Desire which was recently sold to Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum.
Lot 63: Wicket Maiden, a half-sister by Silvano to Master Blaster and Captain’s Knock, from a 100% successful mare.
Lot 114: Elodie, by Silvano, from a mare who has shown early signs of being a prolific producer of winners.
Lot 119: Tarquin, a full-brother to Bold Ellinore and Emperor Napoleon, consigned by Wilgerbosdrift.

Day Two:
Lot 146
: A Mogok filly called Right Address, from a half-sister to Special Parade.
Lot 179
: Hollywood Ridge, by internationally proven Tiger Ridge from a promising Fort Wood mare.
Lot 211
: Castlemartin, a half-brother to promising Valiant, by Captain Al.

Day Three
:
Lot 281
: Radio Waves, a half-brother to Free My Heart, by Spectrum.
Lot 320
: Royal Wave, by Right Approach, from a young half-sister to former SA Nursery winner Manipur.
Lot 401
: Lochinvar, a son of Var and multiple stakes winner Tarn Fairy.
Lot 418
: Bridge Water, a son of Camden Park, from the family of Tuvana Silva and Zopot Casino.

There is a foreign Buyer Travel Incentive offered by BSA as a gesture to buyers who will be travelling from abroad. In addition buyers are reminded to “Tick The Box’’ on their purchase agreements to qualify for the 2010 BloodStock SA Bonus Series, which next year will again comprise 14 races.

Any thoughts by the breeding fundi's on the Spectrum's? They fetched some pretty big prices during the last 2 years, but have not really shown a lot as 2 yr olds; probably will get better as they get older?

Frodo, some info about Spectrum:

6 Gr1 winners, including Golan.
8 Gr2 winners, 6 Gr3 winners.

Of the 20 Gr winners, 10 won more than 1 Gr race. 14 colts, 6 fillies.
4 won Gr races as 2 year olds, 10 as 3 year olds and 13 as older horses.
9 won sprint Gr races, 4 won middle distance and 10 won staying GR races.
Two won a Gr race each on non-turf tracks (Ireland and England).

He's had Gr winners in Australia (4), France (2), England (3), Ireland (8), New Zealand (3).

His daughters have also produced four GR winners including Dutch Art (2 Gr1's and a Gr2), Prince Kaapstad (Gr1 and Gr2), and Winchester (Gr1). Those four have been one each in England, Ireland, USA (dirt Gr1) and New Zealand.

EDIT: We all know there's plenty of Northern Dancer around but anyway, 16 of Spectrum's 20 Gr winners have Northern Dancer on the dam side. 3 of the 4 from his daughters have Northern Dancer on the sires side as well.

Thanks Sabre, the Northern Dancer influence is so obvious, even I noticed that; I think one of the lots on sale has 3 ND lines on the dam side; another is out of a daughter of Royal Academy (and Nijinsky certainly will help as well imo); still I am a little concerned about the performances by the Spectrum runners locally; reminds me somewhat of Saumarez a couple of years ago

Yep, I hear you. It does seem unlikely though that he'd be able to produce big race winners everywhere but here. I suppose the question is whether you can find it if/when he does. All the best if you're in the market for one.

I would give him more time. In fact Spectrum may offer some value right now if people are having doubts or at least sitting on the fence.
