Ascot Stud Colt Top Lot on Day Two
ASCOT STUD’s Tiger Ridge Colt Lot 179 Hollywood Ridge was the top lot and purchased by the Laird Racing Stable for R550,000 on Day Two of the National Two Year Old Sale.
The results have remained steady following a similar trend to the first 125 lots on Day One. With the final 200 lots going under the hammer on Sunday, 16th August it may be premature to anticipate the end figures, but these should remain on par with the first two days. The aggregate of R15,655,000 is down by 2% from last year, with the average price falling 3% to R77,500. BloodStock SA’s CEO, Jan Naudé noted that the pass out rate has increased from 2008 (85%) to a pleasing 88%.
As earlier sales during the past year have indicated, it is definitely a good buyers’ market. This is the sale to buy two year olds with strong pedigrees at a keen price.
All two year olds bought at the sale where the new owners have “TICKED THE BOX” automatically qualify to enter the BSA Bonus Series - 14 races with added stakes in excess of R800,000.

Emperors Palace National Two-Year-Old Sale results exceed all expectations
CHAMPION trainer Charles Laird and Singapore-bound Basil Marcus both purchased “exactly what they came for’’ at the three-day Emperors Palace National Two-Year-Old Sale which drew to a close at the TBA Sales Complex at Gosforth Park on Sunday evening.
Laird’s acquisition of the strong bay colt Hollywood Ridge (Lot 179, R550 000) topped the auction, with Marcus’s purchases of colts Montechino (Lot 381, R500 000) and Al Roberto (Lot 212, R425 000) second and third highest respectively. This helped to ensure an excellent sale aggregate of R30,27 million, which was 13% up on last year’s figure.
In Laird’s view, Hollywood Ridge, by Tiger Ridge from a highly rated Fort Wood mare, was the best horse on the sale and he said: “I trained a very good filly from his second dam who never raced due to injury. He was bought for Markus and Ingrid Jooste.’’
An excited Marcus said: “I bought five horses I liked, all are completely different types of thoroughbreds and I am very chuffed. I didn’t specifically set out to buy progeny of Captain Al, but as it happened I was impressed by both Montechino and Al Roberto.’’
He added: “While Montechino is a very late foal, he is a beautiful walker, already an impressive specimen. Al Roberto is a rangy horse with a lot of scope. I am looking forward to training them.’’
BSA’s Chief Executive Jan Naude was very pleased with the outcome and commented: “The sale kept up its early momentum and although we had more horses to sell, the clearance rate of 92% was well up on last year with fewer lots passing through the ring unsold. This was a good event for buyers and vendors, certainly most encouraging for the sales that lie ahead.’’
BSA’S Sales Manager Caroline Simpson echoed this and said: “The results were much better than expected. The breeders let their stock go at realistic prices and smaller trainers could also participate and buy some stock.
“I didn’t expect a top price of R550 000, but I must say that Hollywood Ridge is a truly magnificent young horse who well deserves that price tag.’’
Klipdrif Stud was the top vendor by aggregate, selling 24 lots for R2,8 million, while Dominic Zaki topped the buyers’ list with 8 lots bought for R1,5 million.
The next Bloodstock Sale will be the Emperors Palace Ready To Run on Sunday, 8 November.

Well if this was a 'buyer's market', I'd hate to see a seller's market. Anything that looked like a horse with a reasonable pedigree went for 100K or more.
Most people before the sale predicted the average to be down 'by 30%'; I haven't seen the final figures, but I think the average is actually up?
I saw Hollywood Ridge, and he was most proabably the best looking horse on sale (imo on par with lot 375 - who went for R400k) but let's face it, his sire is an unknown quantity in South Africa, his dam was only a 2 timer winner, and his older sibling has not yet placed in 2 starts. I guess we will know in about 18 months if he was worth the money or not.
Good luck and well done to Clan members (if any) who managed to secure some new stock
