Gambling study reveals four types of punter
ALL those who place bets fall into one of four different categories according to a study into the thoughts and actions of 43 punters and researchers concluded that the terms "non-problem" and "problem" gambler are now inadequate.
The qualitative study, conducted by the National Centre for Social Research on behalf of the Gambling Commission, focused on a sub-sample of those who took part in the 2007 British Gambling Prevalence Survey and aimed to "provide further insight into participants' gambling behaviour" and, where relevant, "to explore the downsides of gambling".
However, its most eye-catching finding was the categorisation of punters as either peripheral gamblers, gambling enthusiasts, business gamblers or compulsive gamblers.
According to the study:
* Peripheral gamblers bet infrequently and do not necessarily view their actions as gambling. Motivation is something other than the gambling itself e.g. social experience or to get a large win from a small outlay.
* Gambling enthusiasts bet frequently but feel no compulsion to do so. They view betting as a fun activity and are motivated by the desire to outsmart bookmakers.
* Business gamblers see betting as a business rather than a hobby or leisure pursuit.
* Compulsive gamblers, spurred on by a sense of escapism, have a powerful internal drive to punt. Gambling can become a central and controlling feature of their life.
What type of gambler do you think you are?

Game...Tennis, golf...etc...thats a game...RACING IS A BUSINESS...
GAMBLER...someone that sit infront of a slot machine...no intelect is required..all is pot luck...
Hence, can all the gamblers go to their slot machines...
INVESTORS stay behind in RACING...
Study was done by people that got PHD's with no practical experience....idiots..
Being an IT guy, we have many simular groups in the world..Butler group,,,,KPMG,,,,,E&Y,,,,ACCENTURE (ARTHUR ANDERSON),,,,,etc...all with no PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE in the fields that they practise....thank GOD that they are not medical doctors..

perhaps we need a study to find out the downsides of working:
What makes people go and study for 4 years...
to get a job where they will be underpaid for life..
not given promotion when it's due...
be in jail 5 days a week from 6am to 6 pm..
out on parole on weekends...
retrenched when they least can afford it...
put on pension by 63, should they be the unlucky ones to stay on till then..
die 3 to 4 years after going on pension..because they have lost their selfworth..
ONCE PEOPLE RETIRE FROM MANAGEMENT...the next day they are lost...lost their selfworth...nobody wants them..the wife does not want them in the house...
I, myself was an IT PERMANENT EMPLOYEE from 1979 to 1983...
Then an IT CONTRACTOR, paid by the hour, from 1984 till 2004..at +72 Blue chip JSE listed companies and many Government institutions...
Earned more than R120K per month since 1988..
Still...I WAS STUPID to go and work in IT/CORPORATE BUSINESS....
what a waste of a life...
INVESTING in racing... is better life...more money...less stress...no travel..no politics...no promotions..no loss of selfworth...and NO EGO TRIPS...NO JAIL...NO PAROLE....
My advice...stay away from corporate business...
illusions....those that want to build a career...in jail?....

Before the Greeks...we were all Concrete thinkers...after the Greeks we became Abstract thinkers..
STATEMENT : MY UNCLE LAYS 4000 bricks per day.
Concrete thinkers :
4000 bricks / 10 hour = 400 bricks per hour..
400 bricks per hour / 60 min = 6.6 bricks per minute...
1 brick every 10 seconds, 10 hours non stop....5 days a week...
sounds like bullshit..
Abstract thinkers :
my brother is looking for a bricklayer to do his house...120,000 bricks..
must get this guys number...
Yes, the Abstract thinkers had to evolve..
3 types of thinkers..
Feel...80% of the population...mostly females...and Jockeys???
Do you feel the same about the project..
I have a good feeling about this horse...
in Afrikaans...Voel jy ook so oor die saak..
these are the GAMBLERS.....
See....16% of the population...
Do you see what I am telling you...
DO you see the problem in the same light as I do...
in Afrikaans..sien jy die saak ook so...
these are the guys on the track...see the ALUMITES..see how they go down to the start
Understand...4% of the population..
DO you understand me?
In afrikaans...verstaan jy die saak ook so...
these are the guys that read COMPUTERFORM and APPLY COMMON SENSE..

Are the 4 options Scotia listed a progression? I could fall in to each category in a small way.

Here is another categorisation of gamblers:
1)The profit orientated gambler. They are not concerned about the perceptions of those around them, but focus on improving &/or maintaining positive returns!
OR
2)The ego gambler. They are out, mainly, to gain the affirmation of others.Every success shouted out loud and losses hidden.Almost always, bets are revealed only after results are posted. They want the pats on the back and admiration of fellow gamblers,so end up trying to tip for applause instead of focusing on returns.
It is probably true that there is a little of both in all of us gamblers, but if 2) is dominant it's time to re-assess!
