Overdose, the 'Budapest Bullet'

BLINK and you might just miss it. Hungary's sprint sensation Overdose stays at home on Sunday for his seasonal debut under new rider Christophe Soumillon in a 5fevent at Kincsem Park, where the ‘Budapest Bullet' will bid to take his unbeaten record to 12.

The son of Starborough will face seven rivals in the OTP Hungaria Nagydij (Hungariabn Grand Prix) as a prelude to an international campaign set to focus on Britain this summer.

Although Overdose concedes weight all round, defeat on Sunday in front of his home fans is close to unthinkable for a four-year-old described as an "absolute freak" " by Ireland's senior handicapper Garry O'Gorman when he was awarded a mark of 120 in last year's World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings, second only to champion Marchand D'Or among Europe's sprinters.

After winning as he liked in Central Europe last term, this blisteringly fast colt - the best horse seen in Hungary for many decades - scored in Germany before running away with the ‘voided' Prix de l'Abbaye.

But it was to no avail as the famous French sprint was declared a non-race after one of the stalls failed to open - much to the chagrin of Overdose's connections.

Clock and video evidence strongly suggested he might have beaten Marchand D'Or, who took the re-run in Overdose's absence.

On Sunday, as he sets off on the road to compensation, Overdose will be partnered for the first time by French-based superstar Soumillon, who arrived in Hungary from Paris on Friday and who has been booked to ride the horse in all his races this summer.

Trainer Sandor Ribarszki reported Overdose to be in great form, despite a minor setback in his preparation for the race.

He said: "He missed a couple of days' work due to some soreness in his off-fore leg after a problem with a shoeing, but everything is fine now."

Overdose, who demolished the field by 10 lengths on his last start in a Group 3 race in Italy in November, will start as hot favourite for the 7m forint (£21,000) event - a small fortune in terms of Hungarian racing.

"He is obviously the favourite," said Ribarszki. "But the other horses are good and the beauty of horse racing is that the favourite doesn't always win."

Six of Overdose's rivals are locally trained, with The Storm from the Czech Republic, the only foreign raider.

The star attraction must concede 2lb to the seven-year-old Varosbiro - an Irish-bred son of Titus Livius - and between 10lb and 16lb to the rest.

Ribarszki also confirmed that if all goes to plan Overdose will depart to Britain on May 4 prepare for a four-race programme that will take in the Temple Stakes at Haydock on May 23 the King's Stand and the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot, and then the July Cup.

Admission for Sunday's ten-race programme, which starts at 2pm, is free and the course is expecting a crowd of around 20,000 people.

Overdose is indeed a super freak and all the UK bookies are expecting to be smashed by the sprinter this year.

Will be interesting to see how JJ fares...

Hibs, I was watching the race and my browser crashed with a few hundred to go!

I caught the replay tough. Its a great service but a shame its only for US residents. I'll contact them and find out if they can offer the service to UK residents...

confirmed

HUNGARIAN sprinting sensation Overdose started 2009 where he left off 2008 when the ‘Budapest Bullet’ blitzed his rivals with an eight-length victory on his seasonal debut at home at Kincsem Park on Sunday.

Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, who has committed to ride him all season, the four-year-old son of Starborough received a standing ovation as he took his unbeaten record to 12 with a comfortable success inthe OTP Hungarian Nagydij (Hungarian Grand Prix).

Soumillon sent Overdose to the front after two furlongs and he was soon in complete command against overmatched rivals in the 7m forint (£21,000 event) – a smallfortune by the standards of Hungarian racing.

Amid jubilant scenes among a crowd of about 20,000 – the highest for 36 years - Overdose won easily from Spinning Crystal, to whom he was conceding 13lb.

Connections were relieved to get Overdose’s first race of the year out of the way and he will now travel to Britain, where his first objective is the Temple Stakes at Haydock before Royal Ascot

Sounds like a lot of goulash to me but the word 'unbeaten' buried in there presumably tells us what we want to know. I'm not so sure about 'thousands of metres', though. Maybe they should switch to the Ascot Gold Cup!

If u wanna see the speed merchant literally walk all over his opposition check out the link showing yesterdays race.

My Hungarian isn't that good but in any language this speed merchant will take a power of beating when racing in the UK.

To think he was bought for £2100 is pretty unbelievable in itself...

Haydock preparing for visit of Overdose

HAYDOCK is bracing itself for the arrival of Hungarian superstar Overdose in the Betfred.com Temple Stakes on May 23 after his stunning return to action on Sunday.

The 'Budapest Bullet' took his unbeaten record to 12 under his new jockey Christophe Soumillon with a blistering eight-length victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix, a race over 5f at Kincsem Park.

Now connections are eagerly eyeing a four-race programme in Britain this summer, starting with a visit to Haydock, as the four-year-old's trainer Sandor Ribarszki confirmed on Monday.

"He will travel to England in the first week of May with his first target being the Temple Stakes," he said. "Then he'll go to Royal Ascot, and after that to the July Cup. We are looking forward to it very much."

Ribarszki was overjoyed with Overdose's stunning return to the track. "It was a great run," he said.

"He beat the course record and did so despite losing a shoe in the race and he's come out of the race very, very well."

Perhaps even more notable than the performance was the frenzied reception afforded a horse who has become the darling of the Eastern European country.

Overdose carries colours in the Hungarian national flag and was bought very cheaply by owner Zoltan Mikoczy at the Newmarket Sales in 2006.

He is becoming something of a beacon of hope in hard economic times for Hungary, where about three million people, a third of the population, watched on television while estimates of the attendance at Kincsem Park vary between 20,000 and 30,000.

"It was fantastic," said Ribarszki. "There has never been a day like it in Hungarian racing.

"Horse racing has a great history in Hungary but not in recent years. Now there is great interest in the sport again. Yesterday was not just a great day for Overdose, it was a great day for Hungary."

Haydock's clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright travelled over to Budapest and reported: "It was absolutely unbelievable - it is like Seabiscuit.

"This was at a racecourse where normally you get fewer than 1,000 people at a meeting, and this time there were more than 20,000.

"He is clearly a horse who has the potential to be a world-beater," he added. "The plan at the moment is to come for the Temple. It would be great. That is why you run races like that - to attract a real superstar."
