Bookmakers were celebrating their "best ever" Grand National after Mon Mome's 100-1 win.
The Venetia Williams-trained nine year was the joint biggest priced in the great race alongside Foinavon who won a remarkable1967 renewal of the race.
David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "It was better than we could ever have dreamed of. Liam Treadwell was our saviour. A win for Walsh or McCoy would have seen a multi million pound turnaround.
"The sun shone on Aintree and the sun shone on the bookies. As far as we're concerned, the romance of the National lives on. If last year was one for the punters, 2009 was very much one for us."
David Hood, spokesman for William Hill, added: "This is definitely a bonanza-day for the bookies. Such is the enormity of the Grand National that the first half-year profit-and-loss can rest on the result of this one race, and we could not have written a better script for a winner.
"The placings will have saved a fortune for punters, with Comply or Die, My Will and State of Play all well fancied and backed each-way, but what a winner!"
Over £200million is believed to have been staked on the race.

Saw just before the off on the local tote horse 20, 20 to 40, paying R0.70 a place. There must be some burned fingers as the best you could do here was get your money back.
