Value of interviews
16 years 5 months ago
Perhaps one or more of the clever ones can help me out here.
This morning I heard Marshall been asked if Persepolis (the hot favorite) is the best of his 3 runners in the first. Does anyone really expect him to reveal that, if it is the case, one of the unraced runners is lengths better?
A while back Paul Laf interviewed an appy and he was absolutely slated for saying something to the effect that he does not tip to the public. Every time Mark Khan is interviewed he says exactly the same thing – he only puts it differently – “I am trying on all of them.”.
Personally I would prefer if they simply showed reruns of collateral form of every race, rather than have experts tip 6/10 shots.
PS
The Clan members would prefer to watch this:

I agree that many interviews give you no more than what the racecard or the price can tell you, but I does give you a window that the ordinary punter would not have access to otherwise.
In your example Marshall may not admit there is a better unraced stable companion, but some trainers would say something like "15/10 is too short imo" or similar. You have to have big brass ones to lie straight into a camera..ask them, they'd would rather not be available for comment.
We have no more newspaper journalists looking for a story or commenting on the unusual. I like that you can sometimes get a measure of the confidence (or lack of) on some runners. It's especially useful if you like a mid-priced horse to hear the comments where reading between the lines of regular interviewees does help me (if it confirms thoughts I may have).

Vaughn Marshall has always been available for USO.. .and has always been as honest as the the day is long with regards to his opinion as to what is pick of his couplings.A pleasure to deal with over the last nine years.
